Job Summary
The NYS Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) at the Golisano Institute for Sustainability at Rochester Institute of Technology is seeking an Associate Director to oversee, guide, and help implement the Institute’s technical programs that provide hands‑on pollution prevention (P2) assistance to industry, accelerate green technology to market, and support sustainable supply chain initiatives for New York state companies.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide guidance to technical staff in opportunity identification and project scope development; review project scopes, budgets, technical reports, and case studies; and act as a technical resource on applied research/assistance projects.
- Supervise a team of engineers, scientists, and program managers, including hiring, performance management, disciplinary actions, goal setting, training, and delegation of work; develop organizational capacity and mentor staff.
- Identify and resolve complex multi‑dimensional business and technical problems, set priorities, allocate resources, and develop plans that are accountable for performance and results of multiple related teams.
- Respond to requests from the director to provide data related to programs and support strategic decisions.
- Oversee program management and execution, assist with setting metric targets, and track and report progress to the institute director.
- Build strategic relationships with industry, trade organizations, universities, MEP partners, and other stakeholders; represent the Institute at conferences and events.
- Develop project concepts in response to environmental challenges impacting NYS and write grant proposals to secure project funding.
- Co‑develop the Institute’s direction with the NYS sponsor and the NYSP2I director based on current and expected environmental challenges; work with the program administrator and director to develop the annual work plan and metric goals.
- Collaborate with the larger Golisano Institute for Sustainability organization on special projects and initiatives.
Education/Experience
Minimum: 10 years related work experience, including at least 5 years in a technical P2 or clean‑tech/sustainable technology role; 8 years of supervisory experience with direct reports; manufacturing environment experience with expert‑level knowledge of manufacturing processes; experience with technical proposal development and grant funding; experience managing applied or use‑inspired research projects.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of relevant work experience, including 5 years in a technical P2 position or clean‑tech/sustainable technology environment.
- At least 8 years of leadership experience with supervisory responsibility.
- Expert knowledge of manufacturing processes and experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Proven experience developing technical proposals and securing grant funding.
- Experience managing applied or use‑inspired research projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in engineering, chemistry, environmental studies, sustainability, or related field.
- Experience with state and/or federal funding and contracting processes.
- Experience with technology commercialization or green‑tech incubation.
- Familiarity with NYS DEC regulations and environmental initiatives.

The New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) is a statewide technology development, transfer, and assistance center focused on making New York state more environmentally sustainable. Its mission includes direct technical assistance to industry and organizations; research, development, and diffusion; outreach; professional training; a community grants program; and academic educational program development.

Salary range: $120,200 – $201,300.
