Job Summary
The College of Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology is seeking a Post‑Doctoral Researcher under the supervision of Dr. Christy Tyler. The candidate will collaborate with the labs of Drs. Matthew Hoffman, Nathan Eddingsaas, Steven Day, and André Hudson, contributing to an interdisciplinary, collaborative, and growing plastic pollution research and education team. The successful candidate will participate in the recently funded P01 Lake Ontario Center for Microplastic and Human Health, a collaborative Center at RIT and the University of Rochester supported by the National Institutes for Environmental Health Sciences (NIH‑NIEHS) and the National Science Foundation’s Ocean and Human Health Program.
Research activities will focus on climate‑driven input, transport, and fate of plastic debris in the Lake Ontario watershed and near‑shore region.
Applicants must hold a PhD degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline. The ideal candidate will have a background and significant experience in plastic pollution research, including both field and laboratory work. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in ‘omics, molecular techniques, microbiology, and/or instrumentation. Successful candidates will be creative and innovative problem solvers with excellent analytical, quantitative, and communication skills, and will demonstrate the ability to collaborate as an independent contributor or as part of an interdisciplinary team, including mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and academic and outreach/education collaborators.
Applicants must have demonstrated a potential for high‑quality publications and dissemination of research results at conferences and meetings.
- Evidence of ability to conduct independent research.
- Research expertise (PhD thesis or related efforts) in an area relevant to the projects described above.
- Record of publication in peer‑reviewed journals.
- Evidence of commitment to dissemination of research to scientific and community audiences.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Bench work, including analysis of microplastic.
- Experimental design.
- Field work and design of large field experiments.
- Instrumentation, especially related to microplastic analysis.
- Ability to participate in strenuous field activities.
- Molecular techniques, including microbiology and ‘omics.
- Leadership and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.
- Lab management.
