Position Title
Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning (HVAC) Service Engineer – Monroe Community College, Rochester, NY
Job DescriptionThis service position is responsible for repairing, installing, and servicing HVAC systems across the campus. The engineer will work independently, oversee complex repairs, install and maintain HVAC equipment, and respond to maintenance requests and tenant complaints.
Responsibilities- Install and service boilers, air conditioning systems, air compressors, pneumatic systems, ductwork, and control system hardware.
- Measure pipes, solder or brazing metals, wire control systems.
- Maintain and repair heating, refrigeration, and ventilation equipment, including cooling towers, blowers, chillers, motors, compressors, and pumps.
- Handle refrigerant gases safely.
- Analyze energy usage and recommend solutions.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, manuals, and work orders.
- Repair steam and hot water leaks, motors, pumps, steam traps, air handling units, and other HVAC components.
- Perform preventive maintenance: oil changes, filter replacements, belt tightening, bearing replacements, etc.
- Diagnose and solve electrical control, heating, and refrigeration problems.
- Respond to maintenance work requests and tenant complaints.
- Treat water used in air conditioning systems to prevent fungal and bacterial growth.
- Maintain operating logs for all HVAC equipment.
- Train Assistant HVAC Service Engineers and trainees as needed.
- Minimum Qualifications – Must currently hold the HVAC Service Engineer title with Monroe County, or meet one of the following:
- A. Three (3) years paid full‑time (or equivalent part‑time) experience in installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems in commercial or public buildings, including at least one year of heating experience and one year of refrigeration experience.
- B. Associate’s degree or certificate in Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning from a regionally accredited or NY State registered college/university, plus one year paid full‑time experience in HVAC installation, maintenance, and repair with at least one year of heating and one year of refrigeration experience.
- C. An equivalent combination of education and experience defined by A and

- Special Requirements
- Possession of a Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certificate issued by the EPA or approved certifying organization.
- Valid New York State driver’s license or proof of ability to meet transportation needs.
- Preferred Qualifications – Bilingual (Spanish or other language) and able to read, write, and speak proficiently.
- Job Type: Full‑time
- Hours: 6 AM – 2 PM
- Salary: $60,207.06 annually (increment after six months with supervisor approval).
