PositionMinimum Requirements
- Three or more years of reading‑teaching experience, preferably at the elementary level
- Experience with explicit phonics, especially programs such as Literacy Essentials, Riggs, Spaulding, and Orton‑Gillingham
- SC Teaching Certificate (or ability to obtain one prior to employment)
- One of the following:
- Bachelor's degree or higher with a Read to Succeed (R2S) Literacy Coach or R2S Literacy Specialist endorsement
- Bachelor’s degree or higher actively pursuing the R2S Literacy Coach or R2S Literacy Specialist endorsement
- Master’s degree or higher in reading or a closely related field actively pursuing the R2S endorsement
- Experience coaching teachers in curriculum and instruction
- Demonstrated ability to implement instructional strategies that enhance student learning
- Familiarity with SC state ELA standards, assessments, and relevant law impacting K‑12 literacy curriculum and instruction
- Successful background check as required by state law and the South Carolina Department of Education
- Dedication to a rigorous liberal arts education
- Loyalty to the school and Ascent Classical Academies’ mission and vision
- Commitment to modeling moral character in line with the school’s core virtues and the pursuit of the Good, True, and Beautiful
- Adherence to all ACA policies, including the Employee Handbook, Family Handbook, and applicable school and board policies
- Master’s degree in teaching, curriculum and instruction, or related field
- Orton‑Gillingham training
- Experience evaluating and recommending K‑12 literacy curriculum
The primary goal of the Literacy Coach is to improve the school’s K‑8 reading and literacy instruction and student achievement. Particular emphasis is on supporting K‑3 teachers in delivering effective literacy instruction with fidelity to Ascent’s literacy curriculum. The ideal candidate is a master teacher with experience coaching and mentoring staff in explicit phonics instruction and providing literacy‑based professional development. The Literacy Coach will complete both routine tasks and larger projects of the corporate curriculum and instruction team.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Continuously evaluate and recommend improvements of, and facilitate initial and ongoing training for, Ascent Classical Academies K‑3 literacy program for teachers and school leaders
- Provide ongoing formal and informal observations, co‑teaching, modeling, and coaching of literacy teaching in K‑8 classrooms
- Deliver actionable feedback/reports on literacy curriculum and instructional effectiveness to teachers, school leaders, corporate leadership, and the school board
