Position: Deputy Mine Inspector 2025-02990

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs inspections of surface and underground mining operations using appropriate equipment and instrumentation to evaluate compliance with state mining safety standards and related regulations. Investigates mining accidents, fires, and explosions; interprets and applies Wyoming laws governing mining and milling operations; and prepares comprehensive reports detailing findings, conclusions, and recommended corrective actions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Conducts inspections of every mining operation and mining contractor in the area of responsibility at least twice per year to ensure compliance with all Wyoming Mining Law and regulations, covering all equipment, facilities, and work areas of both surface and underground operations.
  • Compiles and submits a comprehensive report of inspection findings, violations cited, and recommendations for improvement; ensures all violations are properly abated by the mine operator or contractor.
  • Travels to mining operations within their area of responsibility, potentially spanning multiple counties; on average travels over 25,000 miles per year, requiring a state vehicle.
  • Continues education regarding mining safety and regulations through attending safety trainings, safety conferences, and personal study of rules and regulations.
  • Investigates hazard complaints, serious accidents, and fatalities, conducting thorough investigations to identify root causes, possible violations, and to assist in identifying preventative measures; submits a comprehensive report of investigation findings and recommendations.
KNOWLEDGE
  • Safe work practices for both surface and underground mining operations.
  • Familiarity with the Mining Laws of the State of Wyoming and how to achieve compliance.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Good time management and organizational skills to schedule and complete inspection requirements.
  • Objectivity in inspections and investigations, excluding personal biases or conflicts of interest.
  • Prioritization and focus for effective self‑management and staying on task.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering

Experience: 10 years of progressive work experience in mining in above- and below-ground operations. Must be at least 35 years of age at the time of hire.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Possess a Wyoming Mine Foreman’s Certificate;
Qualified Elector of the State of Wyoming.

OR

Education & Experience Substitution: 15 years of progressive work experience in mining in above- and below-ground operations; must be at least 35 years of age at the time of hire.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Possess a Wyoming Mine Foreman’s Certificate;
Qualified Elector of the State of Wyoming.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Pre‑employment and periodic physical examinations may be required to confirm fitness, particularly concerning cardiovascular/respiratory health and the ability to safely wear a respirator.
  • Ability to walk long distances; climb ladders; stand for extended periods; and stoop/kneel or crouch at ground level or in constrained spaces.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Excellent corrected vision and depth perception to identify warning lights and gas detector displays in low‑light conditions.
  • Ability to perceive and distinguish spoken voice while wearing required hearing protection and to speak clearly and loudly in high‑noise environments.
  • Potential exposure to various chemicals, noise, thermal exposures, and physical hazards.
  • Requirement to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, steel‑toe boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, fall protection (harnesses), and negative‑pressure respirators; medical qualification required for respirator use.
  • Extensive travel throughout the State of Wyoming.
