Philosophy Faculty

Reports to: Dean of Communications and Humanities

Supervision Exercised: Functional supervision may be exercised over student workers.

Teach assigned classes and perform related activities to classroom instruction. The discipline of philosophy is part of the Communications and Humanities Division, a diverse academic division comprised of the Business, Composition and Literature, Humanities, Mass Communications, Philosophy, and Speech disciplines.

• Meet classes at assigned times.
• Plan course content and assign appropriate coursework.
• Maintain student records.
• Evaluate student progress and assign grades.
• Revise course outlines, objectives, and catalog information as needed.
• Select appropriate texts and teaching materials.
• Maintain office hours convenient for students.
• Prepare course/class reports as required.
• Attend and participate in conferences related to teaching area; membership in appropriate professional organizations is recommended.
• Submit budget requests and written narrative when appropriate.
• Keep abreast of developments in the field.
• Attend required meetings (faculty, division, in-service training, etc.)
• Assist in student learning outcomes assessment at the course, program, and institution level.
• Assist in short-range and long-range planning.
• Adhere to FAMILY EDUCATION RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT (FERPA) and any policies or laws that govern higher education at Rock Valley College.
• Participate in division, college, advisory committees, and community activities.
• Involvement in department, division, and college initiatives.
• Participate in assessment of student learning.

• Assist in student program advisement, as needed.
• Assist in evaluating other divisional faculty members.
• Recruit students when appropriate.
• Assist in placement of graduates when appropriate.

Required Qualifications:

• Master of Arts or PhD Degree or equivalent in Philosophy (requires a minimum of 18 graduate hours in Philosophy)
• Experience teaching several of the courses in the Philosophy curriculum
• Understanding of and commitment to the community college and its mission

Desired

Qualifications:

• Community college teaching experience
• Experience working in a learning management system (LMS)
