Job SummaryTeach assigned classes and perform related activities to classroom instruction. The discipline of philosophy is part of the Communications and Humanities Division, a diverse academic division comprised of the Business, Composition and Literature, Humanities, Mass Communications, Philosophy, and Speech disciplines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Meet classes at assigned times.
- Plan course content and assign appropriate coursework.
- Maintain student records.
- Evaluate student progress and assign grades.
- Revise course outlines, objectives, and catalog information as needed.
- Select appropriate texts and teaching materials.
- Maintain office hours convenient for students.
- Prepare course/class reports as required.
- Attend and participate in conferences related to teaching area; membership in appropriate professional organizations is recommended.
- Submit budget requests and written narrative when appropriate.
- Keep abreast of developments in the field.
- Attend required meetings (faculty, division, in-service training, etc.)
- Assist in student learning outcomes assessment at the course, program, and institution level.
- Assist in short-range and long-range planning.
- Adhere to FAMILY EDUCATION RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT (FERPA) and any policies or laws that govern higher education at Rock Valley College.
- Participate in division, college, advisory committees, and community activities.
- Involvement in department, division, and college initiatives.
- Participate in assessment of student learning.
- Assist in student program advisement, as needed.
- Assist in evaluating other divisional faculty members.
- Recruit students when appropriate.
- Assist in placement of graduates when appropriate.
Required Qualifications:
- Master of Arts or PhD Degree or equivalent in Philosophy (requires a minimum of 18 graduate hours in Philosophy)
- Experience teaching several of the courses in the Philosophy curriculum
- Understanding of and commitment to the community college and its mission

- Community college teaching experience
- Experience working in a learning management system (LMS)
