Job SummaryThe objective of TRIO Upward Bound is to assist participants with the completion of high school and successful transition to college. Tutor/mentors/interpreters support TRIO Upward Bound participants at Auburn and East High Schools by providing individual and small group tutoring during the Academic Year Component and Summer Program.
Tutor/mentors/interpreters will offer academic tutoring in English, Math, Science, and Social Science. Tutoring during the academic year will be held at Auburn High School on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 pm and at East High School on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. Tutor/Mentors will assist with Saturday programming during the academic year (one to two times a month).
During the six‑week summer program, Tutor/Mentors will work at Rock Valley College Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All tutors are required to attend tutor orientation, complete weekly tutoring reports, and model academic behaviors and strategies associated with high school and college success. An interpreter provides translation to participants and program staff as needed.
- Provide both general and course‑specific tutoring for TRIO Upward Bound participants in various subject areas
- Assist students with the development of study skills necessary for successful completion of courses
- Provide encouragement and support to students to help improve academic performance
- Maintain accurate and current documentation concerning student contact and progress
- Maintain confidentiality of information
- Maintain consistent contact with staff and faculty as required
- Conduct tutoring sessions in designated areas for scheduled time periods
- Provide assistance to staff members to research, implement, maintain and improve the tutoring program
- Demonstrate understanding and acceptance of student diversity
- Attend mandatory trainings
- Related duties may be assigned
Essential Duties and Responsibilities for Tutor/Mentor/Interpreter
- Provide interpretation and translation to participants and program staff
- Assist and guide with translation of program documents used for communication among students, staff, parents, and community partners
- Attend parent/guardian meetings to provide academic and holistic support in a wrap‑around service
- Desired languages are Swahili, Arabic, French, Spanish, Korean (other languages considered)

Minimum QualificationsThe Upward Bound Tutor/Mentor must be a current college student, earned at least an Associate’s Degree or have prior experience in tutoring. The Tutor/Mentor must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and at least a B in any subject tutored.
- Familiarity with or work experience with special programs for the disadvantaged
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong level of maturity and personal responsibility
- Demonstrated knowledge of the subject matter to be tutored
- Evening and weekend availability
Prior experience working or tutoring students in higher education or secondary education. Must be able to work in late afternoon and early evening hours. Preference will be given to applicants who are available all four days.
