Overview

The transport Advanced Provider (Paramedic) is responsible for providing high‑quality critical care and transportation of critically ill or injured patients to the appropriate medical facilities, following standards and guidelines set by Mercyhealth Medical Directors. The Paramedic is a key member of the Critical Care (ICU) and Emergency Department teams, and demonstrates the highest quality of emergency/critical care standards and commitment to safety.

Responsibilities include caring for patients, preparing and compiling records, and processing orders in the hospital setting under nursing direction. The role may require weekends, holidays, day, evening, night and/or on‑call hours. The Paramedic also participates in outreach education, quality improvement, and may float to various units and facilities within Mercyhealth based on clinical competency.

Responsibilities
  • Provides pre‑hospital advanced life support care from initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the receiving facility; maintains thorough documentation in Trauma Soft/Epic.
  • Practices within scope of practice as defined by the State of Illinois/Wisconsin and Mercyhealth; maintains competency through ongoing training.
  • Performs advanced skills and procedures approved by Mercyhealth.
  • Maintains documentation of licensure, certifications, continuing education, safety training (OSHA, HIPAA), clinical rotations, and advanced procedures; attends required educational programs.
  • Serves as a role model, educator, and clinical resource; participates in departmental activities, simulation, research, and professional organizations.
  • Acts as a preceptor or participates in onboarding of new partners and students.
  • Knowledgeable in equipment use and maintenance; reports failures and assists with repairs and supplies.
  • Functions as a CCTT ground team member, attending pre‑call briefings, post‑call debriefings, and assisting with radio, navigation, and weather observation.
  • Participates in Mercyhealth meetings, projects, and outreach marketing activities.
  • Maintains a clean work and patient environment; processes orders and supplies accurately; answers phone and call lights.
  • Performs venipuncture, IV access, 12‑lead acquisition, blood glucose analysis, CPR, airway management, chest tube placement, CVP, and splinting as needed.
  • Floats to outlying Mercyhealth facilities (Janesville, Rockford, Walworth, Harvard) based on staffing needs.
  • Directs visitors to patients’ rooms; maintains medical records; processes patient charges and supplies.
Requirements
  • Minimum two years (4,000 hours) recent experience in a high‑volume 911 system and Advanced Life Support (ALS); preferred five years.
  • Previous critical care transport experience preferred.
  • National Registry Certificate required.
  • Paramedic license in the state of practice required.
  • Dual state licensure (Illinois and Wisconsin) required within 90 days.
Additional Certifications / Trainings
  • BLS/CPR, ACLS, PALS required within 90 days.
  • NIMS Training IS100, 200, 700, 800 and Hazmat within 90 days.
  • EVOC driving course completion within 3 months of hire.
  • Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required within 3 months of hire.
  • National Institute Healthcare Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required within 1 year of hire.
  • Pre‑hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) within 3 months of hire.
  • Specialty certification: CCP‑C or equivalent within 2 years of hire.
  • Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC) attendance required within 1 year of hire.
  • Passing the Motor Vehicle Report.
