The outpatient RN works with the team to prepare and recover patients for surgery, minor and GI procedures, works in the GI suite during procedures, provides discharge teaching and patient education, transports patients as needed, performs IV insertions, infusions, and monitors patients throughout procedures.
- Uses the nursing process to assess, plan, and evaluate patient care.
- Provides nursing care considering the age group served within the health care system.
- Demonstrates appropriate safety and infection control measures.
- Teaches, directs, advises, and informs others professionally.
- Reports and records information legibly and appropriately.
- Maintains annual unit-specific mandatory competencies prior to expiration.
- Attends and completes required meetings, in-services, and competency validation activities.
Responsibilities
Physical:
- Accesses entire facility; lifts and transports patients, supplies, and equipment. Demonstrates manual dexterity, hearing acuity, and verbal acuity.
- Stands for long periods, walking, lifting, bending, and stooping during work hours. Has sufficient endurance for tasks over lengthy periods.
- Exposes to blood/body fluids, hazardous materials, and communicable diseases. Ensures a safe environment at all times.

Works cooperatively with co-workers, volunteers, and other team members to provide quality care.
Demonstrates physical assessment skills.
Displays effective organizational skills, prioritizing accurately and quickly.

Develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Maintains clinical and professional competency levels for age-specific populations.
When not performing patient care, anticipates unit needs, including stocking supplies.
Qualifications
Current North Carolina RN license or RN multi-state licensure privilege through the Nurse Licensure Compact required.
- Department-specific certification requirements must be achieved within the first year of employment and maintained annually.
Certifications include BLS, ACLS, PALS, NCI – Maintain certifications prior to renewal date, unless under a National Pandemic situation, then certifications will be completed as soon as available.
