Job Description Summary

Performs phlebotomy functions and non–technical duties in areas including SSH&EC Laboratory, outpatient and off-site services.

Job Description Essential Functions
  • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, and heelstick ) according to established procedure of South Shore Hospital.

    • Performs venipuncture using correct technique and with minimal discomfort to the patient.
    • Performs fingerstick procedures with correct technique and when unable to obtain specimen by venipuncture.
    • Performs heelstick on babies with correct technique.
  • Under supervision will help in the training of new employees and student interns at SSH&EC in the performance of phlebotomy duties.

    • Works with new employees to assist in training of departmental procedures.
    • Acts as a resource to new employees.
  • Follows all organizational and department or unit policies and procedures.

  • OUTREACH:
    Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes.

    • Identifies patients by asking patient their name and date of birth.
    • Sign labeled tubes with phlebotomists' initials also, time & date of draw.
  • Organizes assigned work and accurately completes work load.

    • Requests & schedules Outreach patients utilizing Hospital computer system
    • Organizes morning routes to include fastings and drug levels.
    • Organizes routes by town for homebound patient draws.
    • Calls homebound patients to schedule draw times within two hours time frame.
    • Accepts STAT add-on calls within the contracted time frames.
    • Draws all assigned patients by the end of the shift.
    • Completes accurate tally prior to the conclusion of the work shift.
  • Calls/faxes/delivers reports to Outreach/Off-site clients/areas as required.

      Calls completed results to doctor’s offices in a timely manner.
  • Notifies VNA of STAT or abnormal results when requested.
  • Helps co-workers and communicates with the Outreach Coordinator when needed to ensure an orderly work flow.

    • Assists co-workers with additional blood-draws as necessary including add-ons and STAT's.
    • Assists co-workers in scheduling patient draws when unavailable due to vacation or illness.
    • Informs Outreach Coordinator of problems in obtaining specimens for any reason.
    • Updates all patients' information received into hospital computer system.
  • EKG:
    Performance of Electrocardiograms

    • Enter all patient demographics into EKG cart.
    • Introduce self, explain procedure to patient, check patient .
    • Apply 4 limb leads and 6 precordial leads according to standardized placement.
    • Collect 12 seconds of data and insure that tracing is complete and good quality.

      Print one (1) copy of EKG: allow data to store to disk.
    • Deliver one (1) copy to patient's chart (or nurse).
    • Transmit disk to Data Management System.
  • Consistently adheres to the established protocol for patient identification using two patient identifiers when performing EKG function.

  • Technology – Is receptive to technological solutions to work processes and practices.

  • Safety Awareness – Fosters a “Culture of Safety” through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment as stated in the Safety Management Program Manual, Infection Control Manual and Phlebotomy Policies & Procedure Manual. The employee is knowledgeable of who the Hospital Safety Officer is.

    • Consistently adheres to established Laboratory and Hospital policies for Universal Precautions and Safety Procedures.
    • When handling blood/and or body fluids, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be utilized in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases.
    • Wears gloves, gowns, goggles, or masks as required.
    • Knows where to find Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for any item used in job performance.
