DescriptionIn order to create a pool of qualified applicants, Sierra College accepts applications in all subject areas and conducts interviews for teaching positions throughout the year. Applications are kept in the hiring pool for a period of two years. The number of open positions varies from semester to semester. The Division Dean or Department Chair will contact you directly for an interview when a position becomes available.

- Curriculum Development – Review and evaluate curriculum to meet student interests and needs; coordinate with part‑time instructors; evaluate and revise course descriptions; present new or revised curriculum to committees; make changes as approved within shared governance; review curriculum in accordance with laws, regulations, and standards.
- Lecture/Laboratory Preparation and Presentation – Complete book order forms; provide syllabi to bookstore; prepare lesson plans; present lecture/laboratory content clearly; use analogies; provide instructional objectives; design and develop new classroom and laboratory techniques; assign homework; develop handouts; prevent unacceptable behavior; attend workshops; prepare and update syllabus materials; prepare audiovisual materials.
- Student Performance Evaluation – Develop quizzes and exams; monitor exams; evaluate student responses; grade papers; tabulate scores; advise students on academic matters; refer to student services.
- Advising/Counseling – Collaborate with counseling center and admissions; maintain availability to students; advise on planning and scheduling of classes.
- Shared Governance Participation – Attend and participate in departmental meetings; respond to requests; participate in curriculum development; serve on campus committees.
- Ancillary Program Activities – Stay current in ESL field; recommend class schedules; adjust catalog; assist ESL students and faculty; participate in ESL department meetings; orient new faculty; participate in staff development; engage in professional conferences.
Master’s in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis or education with a TESL emphasis OR Bachelor’s in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND Master’s in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech or any foreign language OR the equivalent.
