DescriptionUnder the general direction of an educational administrator, the Counselor will provide counseling to a diverse student population in areas of personal, educational, career development/vocational choice, psychological testing, and other matters. Responsibilities include assessment techniques, orientation and outreach, crisis intervention, emergency counseling, liaison functions between students and external stakeholders, and related duties as required.
Examples of Functions and Tasks- Academic Advising/Educational Planning (Essential) – Assist students with course selection, provide information on degree requirements, develop and update Student Educational Plans (SEPs), evaluate progress toward goals, and refer to other services as appropriate.
- Career/Vocational Counseling and Development (Essential) – Clarify career goals, provide self‑knowledge development, share labor‑market information, administer career assessments, and offer job‑seeking skills.
- Personal Counseling (Essential) – Provide counseling for interpersonal issues, decision‑making, behavioral problems, substance issues, gender/sexuality concerns, health problems, and crisis intervention.
- Assessment and Interpretation (Essential) – Administer and interpret assessment instruments and advise students on results.
- Instruction (Essential) – Teach Personal Development courses, develop curriculum, maintain records, and present lectures.
- Outreach/Liaison (Essential) – Participate in high‑school visits, liaison with local schools and higher‑education institutions, and represent the District at community events.
- Student Advocacy/Development (Essential) – Facilitate support groups and workshops, refer students to resources, and participate in orientations.
- District Programs (Essential) – Serve on shared governance committees, liaison with Counseling Center units, and support institutional planning.
- Specialized Programs (Essential) – Develop, coordinate, and evaluate program activities for specific student populations.
- Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or a related field.
- OR equivalent experience, with a bachelor's degree and MFT license an alternative qualification.
- Verification of credentials, transcripts, Live Scan, and tuberculosis examination as required.
- Knowledge (Essential) – General counseling theories and practices.
- Ability (Essential) – Communicate effectively, provide diverse counseling services, work independently, solve problems, instruct, supervise, and function under pressure.
Function primarily in an office or classroom environment; must sit for desk work, operate a computer, read and write materials, and occasionally walk or stand while teaching.
CompensationPlacement on the District Faculty Salary Schedule; entry‑level: $72,539.35 – $97,209.68. Benefits include health, welfare, and income protection; members of the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS); sick leave, sabbatical, and other leaves per the collective bargaining agreement.
