Job Description

Sierra College seeks a student-centered, equity-minded English faculty member committed to fostering student success and closing equity gaps. The successful candidate will teach English courses that may include assignments within and/or Puente, Umoja, or the Native American Student Success and Support Program (NASSSP) learning communities. These programs integrate culturally responsive curriculum, counseling, and mentoring to promote academic achievement, transfer, and leadership development among historically underrepresented students.

Faculty teaching within Puente, Umoja, or NASSSP collaborate closely with counselors, mentors, and program coordinators to provide holistic academic and personal support for students. Assignments may include participation in statewide or regional training, such as the Puente and/or Umoja Summer Institute, and engagement in ongoing professional development focused on equity‑minded pedagogy and culturally sustaining practices.

The instructional assignment may include, but is not limited to, teaching and/or Puente, Umoja, or NASSSP English courses, Co‑Requisite/English Support, College Composition, Advanced Composition, Critical Thinking, Literature, and Creative Writing. The candidate will support and/or participate in Puente, Umoja, or NASSSP learning communities through integrated assignments, co‑curricular activities, and program events.

Examples of Functions and Tasks

Curriculum Development
ESSENTIAL
:
Review and evaluate curriculum to meet student interests and needs within divisional/departmental budget constraints; coordinate with part‑time instructors to enhance consistency of lecture and laboratory content; ensure transferability of courses within CSU and UC systems; revise course descriptions; present proposals for curriculum changes; enact approved changes.

Lecture/Laboratory Preparation
ESSENTIAL
:
Prepare lesson plans for lectures and labs; produce master copies of syllabi; select appropriate textbooks; develop and update syllabus materials; plan and coordinate classroom and laboratory instructional materials.

Lecture/Laboratory Presentation
ESSENTIAL
:
Deliver clear, logical lessons; use examples and visual aids; provide objectives; outline major points; encourage student participation; evaluate student performance; assign homework and laboratory work; promote critical thinking.

Student Performance Evaluation
ESSENTIAL
:
Develop assessments; monitor exams; grade assignments; provide academic advising; refer students to support services.

Shared Governance Participation
ESSENTIAL
:
Attend departmental meetings; respond to requests for information; participate in curriculum development; serve on campus committees; assist in assessment of part‑time instructors.

Ancillary Student Services
ESSENTIAL
:
Hold office hours; advise on academic performance; serve as a positive role model; participate in graduation ceremonies.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition; or Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master's in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism; or equivalent experience.   • Experience or interest in teaching within and/or Puente, Umoja, or NASSSP learning communities.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in curriculum and instruction.
  • Familiarity with the mission of Puente, Umoja, and NASSSP.
  • Ability to collaborate with counselors, mentors, and program coordinators for student success.
  • Willingness to participate in statewide and regional training aligned with Puente, Umoja, or NASSSP requirements.
  • Experience integrating culturally sustaining practices and validation‑based pedagogy into English instruction.
