Position Overview – The Field Service Engineer performs warranty repairs, commissioning, and maintenance of SMA utility inverters in the field. Duties include troubleshooting, repairing, learning to analyze data, and operating and maintaining utility inverter applications while working with high‑voltage electricity and providing excellent customer service at customer sites.
Primary Duties / Responsibilities
- Commission, troubleshoot, repair, and analyze SMA America’s utility inverters in the field via email, telephone, and site visits.
- Develop detailed knowledge of SMA’s utility inverter products, accessories, and third‑party accessories sold by SMA.
- Maintain accurate inventory counts of spare parts provided by SMA and work regularly with high‑voltage DC electricity, three‑phase power, and relevant software and firmware of the inverters.
- Maintain a high level of customer satisfaction while striving to lower field service costs.
- Perform and maintain maintenance activities in accordance with the SMA product maintenance manual on assigned sites with contractual obligations.
- Be available to work weekends and/or nights on a case‑by‑case basis. Other duties as may be required or assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field is strongly preferred.
- At least 3 years of experience in electrical, electronic, and/or network communications; prior solar energy industry experience strongly preferred.
- Must routinely lift up to 50 pounds.
- Strong ability to work independently and as part of a regional/global team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to work nonstandard business hours occasionally to support customer service contracts.
- Knowledge of solar and/or alternative energy markets.
- Knowledge of National Electric Code.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems effectively.
- Travel for field service; domestic and international travel may be required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Attention to detail and high accuracy.
- Ability to work flexible hours such as early morning, evening, or weekend work may be required.
- A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

- Pay: $27.40 – $33.41 annually, dependent upon experience.
