Job Description

Part Time BAILIFF – Court bailiffs are law‑enforcement officers who are situated in courtrooms to maintain order and provide security. They may pick up/transport prisoners to and from a detention facility to the courtroom (adult/juvenile). Along with guarding juries and enforcing rules of the courts, bailiffs open court by announcing the judge’s arrival and close court by announcing the judge’s departure.

The current, presiding hourly rate will be paid for all hours worked. Work schedule will be based upon the needs of the Aransas County Sheriff’s Office; hours will vary from zero (0) to twenty (20) hours per week. There is no set number of hours. Officers will be responsible for personal continuing‑education requirements. The County is not responsible for providing this benefit.

Officers will serve “at‑will” and may be dismissed for any or no reason.

Key Responsibilities
  • May call witnesses to the stand and present the oath before witnesses take the stand.
  • May provide administrative support to judges and jurors by stocking courtroom supplies, delivering court documents, and taking custody of offenders, filling out all required paperwork and booking offenders into the Detention Center.
Essential Duties
  • Report to:
    Deputy Chief, Chief Deputy, Sheriff.
  • Directs:
    Courtroom.
  • Other:
    Has contact with other department employees, other law‑enforcement agencies, inmates and the general public.
Required Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Must have a current/valid Texas Peace Officer’s License.
  • Must pass oral interview board.
  • Must pass psychological interview furnished by the department.
  • Must pass medical and UA screening furnished by the department.
  • Must possess a Texas Driver’s License and Social Security Card valid for employment.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must pass criminal background check.
  • Prior military personnel shall provide a DD214 form (honorable discharge).
