Job Description
This role is responsible for the leadership and oversight of all construction activities related to assigned X-energy nuclear and non-nuclear projects valued between $50M and $4B in total capital cost. The position plays a critical strategic role in defining enterprise-wide construction policies, standards, and project delivery frameworks, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and regulatory requirements. The Senior Director ensures safety, quality, compliance, and operational excellence across the entire construction portfolio.
Job Profile Tasks/Responsibilities
• Provide leadership and overall accountability for the successful delivery of assigned construction projects, including nuclear operator and maintenance training facilities, major system integration sites, nuclear fuel handling/storage, and nuclear power plants.
• Develop and enforce corporate construction policies, safety culture, and performance standards. Authorize and enforce work stoppages proactively to maintain site safety and regulatory compliance.
• Lead multi-disciplinary teams through strategic planning, resource allocation, and risk management to optimize construction execution and project outcomes.
• Collaborate with executives, project development teams, owners, operators, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders to establish project objectives, resolve issues, and promote transparency.
• Provide executive oversight of in-house and contractor work scopes, including civil construction and complex systems installations (power, instrumentation and control, HVAC, cooling water, process gas systems).
• Critically review and approve construction estimates, schedules, specifications, and “Issue for Construction” documentation to ensure constructability, completeness, and adherence to budget and timelines.
• Oversee material review boards, non-conformance panels, and testing failure investigations, driving corrective and preventive actions.
• Execute enterprise-level monitoring of earned value management (EVM), project financials, safety performance, and technical adequacy. Lead reporting on project status, trends, risks, and mitigation strategies to executive leadership.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives for construction processes, safety protocols, team development, and technology adoption.
• Represent the organization externally to regulators, investors, and community stakeholders regarding construction project status, risk mitigation, and regulatory compliance.
• Mentor and build capacity in senior project managers and construction leadership to sustain a high-performing, safety-focused culture.
• Maintain professional communication and behavior standards consistently across all organizational and external interactions.
• Perform additional duties as required by executive management.
Job Profile
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or Construction Management.
• Typically, twenty plus years of relevant work experience in construction project management.
• Five years’ experience leading construction teams in the build, test, and commissioning of complex hardware assembly, integration, and/or test facilities.
• Five years’ experience on a U.S., Canadian, or UK nuclear construction site in a management or leadership role.
• Detailed knowledge of construction contract structures, including knowledge and/or experience negotiating terms, incentives, distribution of liabilities and other project controls.
• Knowledgeable in the application and use of project management tools to control, measure, and monitor construction work.
