Teacher, Special Education (Home School Model)
Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Physical Demands:

Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS. The courses are designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities, particularly courses in behavioral management which include nonviolent crisis interventions.
Teachers in these identified schools and programs will be required to support behavioral interventions.
Job specific information:
Wage range $64,591 – $131,472. Hours Monday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (flexible). Primary location Rockville. Part‑time, day job, 10 working months.
- Knowledge of MCPS curriculum, special education program, IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, research‑based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments.
- Knowledge of methods of teaching elementary math, ESSA 2015, IDEA 2004, and related policies.
- Ability to provide instructional support, adapt programs/materials, communicate effectively with students, parents, and teachers.
- Excellent communication skills. Knowledge of and application of the six performance standards from the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
- Bachelor’s degree in special education (certified). MCA desirable.
- Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years teaching experience at level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary). Combined education, training, and experience may be considered.
- Certificate License:
Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.
Part‑time, day job, Monday‑Friday 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (flexible). Working months: 10.
