Job Summary
Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. The teacher monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities, assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP), and supports behavioral interventions as required by the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) behavioral management courses.

Salary & CompensationHourly wage range: $20.29 – $35.84 per hour. This position does not include benefits.
Physical Demands &Special Requirements
Physical demands are as required by the duties of the position. Teachers in special education schools or discrete service models must complete required MCPS courses, including non‑violent crisis intervention, and attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Knowledge of the MCPS curriculum and special education program for the grade/content range of the position.
- Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research‑based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments.
- Knowledge of Elementary math instructional methods (for elementary positions).
- Familiarity with ESSA (2015), IDEA (2004), and related state and federal policies and procedures related to special education.
- Ability to provide instructional support and adapt instructional programs and materials appropriately.
- Excellent communication skills and strong collaboration with students, teachers, and parents/guardians.
- Ability to apply the six performance standards of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in special education.
- Fluency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
- Student teaching in a specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at a level appropriate to the assignment (elementary or secondary).
- Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills may be considered.
- Certificate/License:
Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
