Elementary School, Special Education Teacher
Overview
Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).

Special RequirementsRequired to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities, particularly courses in behavioral management including nonviolent crisis interventions.
Teachers in these identified schools and programs will be required to support behavioral interventions.
The wage range for this position is a salary between $64,591 and $131,472 based on education and experience. For information about benefits, please follow the link below:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum for the grade/content range of the position and MCPS special education program.
- Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments.
- Thorough knowledge in methods of teaching elementary math if seeking an elementary position.
- Knowledge of and the ability to apply the six performance standards established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
- Ability to provide instructional support and work well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Understanding of ESSA (2015), IDEA (2004) and state/federal policies related to special education.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
- Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
- Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years teaching experience at a level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary).
- Certificate license:
Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
