Summary: Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, you will provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities, collaborate with general‑education teachers, monitor and evaluate student outcomes, and assist in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEP). You will support behavioral interventions as required, attend school meetings and activities outside instructional hours, and complete specific courses on behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions as mandated.

Special RequirementsRequired to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete service models must successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions, and support behavioral interventions as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Thorough knowledge of the MCPS curriculum and special education program.
- Familiarity with IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, and research‑based instructional practices.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with students, teachers, and parents/guardians.
- Ability to adapt instructional programs and materials for diverse learners.
- Knowledge of the six performance standards of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System.
- Bachelor’s degree in special education from an accredited institution.
- Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
- Student teaching or two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level.
- Must hold or be able to obtain Maryland State Department of Education Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.
- Content area certification is desirable.
- Completion of behavioral management and crisis intervention courses as required.
