WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The Montgomery County Department of Finance (Finance), Division of Risk Management, is seeking an Occupational Safety and Health Specialist. The Division of Risk Management, Safety Section, is responsible for establishing an Occupational Safety and Health program and ensuring compliance with Federal Occupational Safety and Health Standards (OSHA) and Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) workplace safety requirements. The primary duties of the Occupational Safety and Health Specialist include fostering a positive safety and health culture at the workplace while working with departments to prioritize safety across all County operations.

Routine tasks involve collaborating with departments to identify program and facility deficiencies and developing action plans to ensure compliance. Additionally, the Occupational Safety and Health Specialist works to implement Occupational Safety and Health programs, identify hazards, conduct worksite assessments, and assist departments in eliminating and reducing safety and health issues. Other responsibilities include helping departments develop, implement, and improve safety strategies, management systems, and processes to ensure that every County work operation maintains the highest safety and health standards.

This work directly influences the quality of the Occupational Safety and Health services provided to County employees and volunteers in all departments and agencies by reducing or eliminating exposure to unsafe conditions and the risk of injuries and illnesses. It is carried out both in the field and in an office environment. The incumbent must visit various worksites weekly to collaborate with departments in establishing and enforcing standards, providing training and education, and assisting in designing, implementing, controlling, and evaluating the provisions of the County’s Occupational Safety and Health Program.

This position requires the ability to work at locations outside the office, including, but not limited to, Maintenance and Body Shops, Transit Depots, Waste Transfer Stations, Recycling Centers, Incinerator facilities, Fire Stations, Public Safety Training Academies, Pools, and other areas that may require PPE and/or involve physical activities.

Three (3) years of professional experience in Occupational Safety and Health, General Industry Safety, or Construction Safety (or related).
