Production Automation Operator – 2nd Shift (2pm–10:30pm)

Job SummaryThe Production Automation Operator will assist in installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting automated systems to ensure optimal performance and efficiency in support of production. This support role collaborates with structural foam process technicians and involves starting, stopping, and troubleshooting integrated automation systems. A strong sense of teamwork and a passion for innovation and problem‑solving are essential.
Essential Functions- Commission automation equipment and collaborate with the team on PLCs, HMIs, sensors, actuators, and robotic systems.
- Start‑up, shut‑down, and troubleshoot automation lines and integrated systems.
- Manage changeover of tooling/fixturing during product family changes.
- Conduct routine maintenance and inspections of automation equipment to prevent downtime and report findings to maintenance, engineering, or production supervisors.
- Perform first‑level preventive maintenance and adhere to 5’S housekeeping.
- Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydra‑ulic, and software problems, diagnosing and resolving issues.
- Collaborate with engineers and production personnel to implement automation solutions that improve efficiency, quality, and safety.
- Maintain accurate production reporting, downtime logs, maintenance records, equipment performance, and system modifications.
- Adhere to safety protocols while working with automation equipment and installations.
- Report daily production records and downtime on provided sheets or electronic forms.
- Inspect machines hourly to ensure production of good‑quality parts and prevent scrap.
- Perform entry‑level robot programming (e.g., touch‑up) as required.
- Communicate with shift team members regarding performance, scrap, and daily operations.
- Serve in break‑relief capacity for production operators as needed.
- Assist with MSK and/or Robo‑saw duties in addition to core responsibilities.
- Report directly to the shift production supervisor and ultimately to the Plastics Operations Manager, with dotted‑line responsibility to automation and process engineering groups.
- Understand and follow all departmental safety rules and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Complete required ISO sections for the position.
- Computer terminal; MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Oracle, and various software.
- Associate degree or technical diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation Technology, or related field; bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Proven experience as an Automation Operator or in a similar role.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Good mechanical skills and use of hand/power tools.
- Hands‑on experience with electrical troubleshooting, including multimeters and test equipment.
- Familiarity with mechanical systems, pneumatics, and hydraulics.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills and ability to work under pressure.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with cross‑functional teams.
- Attention to detail and commitment to high‑quality work.
- Willingness to work flexible hours and respond to emergency calls as needed.
- Knowledge of safety standards and regulations related to automation systems.
- Good vision (corrective lenses permitted) for central and peripheral vision.
Standing, sitting, walking, and using central and peripheral vision and hearing continuously; speaking and verbal communication; bending, stooping, twisting neck, and torso frequently; reaching, holding, grasping, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying raw material, finished product, tools, and machinery up to 50 pounds frequently.
Work indoors; exposure to temperatures commensurate with outdoor seasonal temperatures.
