AVP, Underwriting Director – Core Contract Surety

Zurich North America is seeking a highly technical underwriting leader to join the Underwriting Team for the Core Contract Surety Division in Boston, MA. The role is Full Time and requires approximately 20% travel. The executive‑level candidate will oversee new and renewal surety business, manage key accounts, and collaborate with internal marketing and external broker relationships to drive cross‑sell efforts while adhering to Zurich’s underwriting framework.

• Underwrite and analyze new and renewal surety business on delegated authority levels.
• Produce and manage a large book of prominent accounts.
• Execute external marketing strategy and support cross‑sell initiatives.
• Adhere to underwriting rules and guidelines and the Zurich Way of underwriting.
• Work within limits and authorities on assignments with varying degrees of complexity.

• High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5+ years in Underwriting, Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking.
• High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support.
• Zurich Certified Apprentice program with associate degree and 3+ years in Underwriting or Market Facing.
• Zurich Certified Apprentice program with associate degree and 8+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support AND.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
• Experience working in a team environment.

• High School Diploma or Equivalent and 7+ years in Underwriting, Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking.
• High School Diploma or Equivalent and 14+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support.
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with associate degree and 5+ years in Underwriting or Market Facing.
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with associate degree and 12+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support AND.
• Experience with Microsoft Office.

• Bachelor’s Degree.
• In‑depth knowledge of Surety lines of business and legal & regulatory guidelines.
• Ability to assess risk and negotiate with brokers.
• Strong broker relationships and relationship‑building skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication.
• Understanding of underwriting philosophy and national/local filing regulations.

Executive Underwriter: $98,500.00 – $ (short‑term incentive bonus 15%). AVP, Underwriting Director: $ – $ (short‑term incentive bonus 20%). All ranges are nationwide market ranges and not adjusted for geographic differentials.
