Lead Teacher, Child Development Center at Nash Community College (Rocky Mount, NC)
Responsibilities- Provide day-to-day quality age appropriate lesson plans for children in the respective age groups and maintain and evaluate a program plan for the education of the children.
- Treat children, parents, students, and each other with respect and kindness. Children must be nurtured and discipline must always be respectful of the child. The confidentiality of each child and family must be maintained at all times.
- Maintain flexibility with staff patterns, schedules, and Center responsibilities as the goal of the Center is to provide quality early education that requires the performance of various duties to benefit the program.
- Support and comply with all Center policies.
- Read, understand, and practice the following handbooks: NCC Employee Manual, NAEYC Code of Ethics, NAEYC–DAP Book, NC State Licensing Regulations, Environment Rating Scales, NC State Health Department Regulations, Healthy Young Children, NCC-Child Development Center Parent Handbook, NCC-Child Development Center Staff Handbook.
- Work collaboratively with the EDU department faculty to ensure development appropriate practice is demonstrated for EDU interns with the classroom setting.
- Promote child development and learning.
- Build family and community relationships.
- Maintain classroom environment in the absence of the lead teacher.
- Demonstrate developmentally effective approaches to connect with children and families.
- Serve as an Early Childhood Professional and use such standards to manage relationships.
- Promote healthy eating practices according to Division of Child Development and Early Education.
- Read and comply with all correspondence issued by NCC and/or the Director, Child Development Center.
- Maintain current personnel file.
- Maintain the physical environment during the lead teacher's absence, ensuring the classroom is clean, health and safety regulations are met, group area arranged to meet needs of children, and organization/neatness of group area.
- Help ensure all charts/forms are accurate: daily reports, accident reports, medicine forms, feeding charts, and sign-on/out sheets.
- Develop and maintain open lines of communication with parents, develop specific communication networks, acknowledge parent needs, discuss their child's development, and ensure parents are familiar with all staff and volunteers.
- Attend and participate in staff/parent meetings.
- Maintain daily schedule and plans for classroom activities for effective instruction and orderly operation when Lead teacher is away from children.
- Continue to implement program while lead teacher is out of the classroom, ensuring that the "minimum program requirements" are met.
- Participate in staff development activities and evaluation processes as appropriate.
- Attend the NC-AYEYC annual conference and complete the required number of in-service hours according to DCDEE.
- Participate in professional development activities provided by NCC.
- Participate in College events and activities.
- Maintain regular and consistent on-site attendance during normal hours of college operations in fulfillment of duties not inconsistent with the expectations for full-time employees and College policies and procedures.
- Initiate and answer telephone calls and video conference calls.
- Perform other duties as assigned which contribute to the efficient and effective operation of NCC.
- Serve on various committees as assigned.
- Participate in and support ongoing assessment, planning and evaluation to improve student learning.
- Maintain stationary position, sitting or standing, for extended periods of time.
- Operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
- Must be able to kneel, bend, squat, lift, push, pull, and carry objects or children.
- Occasionally lift, move, transport, install, or remove items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- The ability to communicate information so that others understand.
- The ability to observe details.
Currently holds, or is currently pursuing, a two-year degree in Early Childhood Education or an equivalent field. Must submit a Federal criminal record check and fingerprints. Shall be immunized, have a current TB skin test, and be in good physical health as evidenced by an annual physical examination documentation. The teacher is also responsible for a current certification in CPR, First Aid, and for meeting State requirements.
Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or related discipline from a regionally accredited institution preferred.
