Summary

Provides safe and timely ground transport of patients, while also providing basic life support care to patients. Ability to adapt to new skills and information is essential to succeed in this role. This position is physically demanding and requires excellent driving and customer service skills along with some computer skills. It is essential that EMT‑Bs in this capacity are comfortable with providing out‑of‑hospital care and willing to learn new skills to facilitate the transfer of patients.

Additionally, provides personal care and basic nursing care and advanced tasks to patients assigned under the direct supervision of the RN Shift Supervisor when performing duties in the ED. Candidates for this role will be trained as a Clinical Helper during their orientation and training to perform skills in the ED when not providing transport duties.

Responsibilities
  • Monitors patient condition during ground transport to provide optimal stabilization.
  • Performs appropriate interventions during transport according to UNC Nash Specialty Care Protocols within the guidance of the NC Office of EMS (NCOEMS).
  • Monitors communication equipment and communicates with dispatch personnel, medical staff, family members and other stakeholders: ensures relevant information is collected and proper treatment is administered, communicates assessments and plan of care in a professional manner with the appropriate personnel.
  • Documents patients’ status, delivery of care and evaluation of the patients’ response to care according to unit specific procedures and established protocols.
  • Contacts physicians for guidance, as needed, and follows treatment protocols as described by UNC Nash Specialty Care Transport Medical Direction.
  • Operates medical and mechanical equipment in the pre‑hospital, hospital, and transport environment. Ensures all various medical equipment is functioning; restocks medical supplies as needed.
  • Obtains direction regarding further care from medical staff. Delivers emergency care, such as CPR, oxygen, bandaging and splinting to patients, in accordance with reestablish protocols under UNC Hospitals Critical Care Transport Medical Direction, if necessary.
  • Participates in plan of care for patients who are acutely ill and require transport from referring institutions.
  • Performs patient care duties as assigned per the Clinical Helper description when working in a staffing capacity within the ED during transport “down time” (See Clinical Helper Job Description).
Other Information Education Requirements
  • High school graduate or GED.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
  • EMT‑B Current certification as EMT‑B with the NC Office of Emergency Medical Services.
  • BCLS Certification Recertification required every 2 years.
  • CPI Certification (Must obtain within 1 year of hire) Recertification required every 2 years.
  • Valid NC Driver’s License.
Professional Experience Requirements
  • 2 years’ experience as an EMT (B).
