SummaryThe Registered Respiratory Therapist provides professional respiratory care to patients from newborns through geriatrics. Therapists perform critical care, general patient care assignments, and related activities within the scope of practice as defined by the North Carolina Respiratory Care Practice Act.
Responsibilities- Administers standard respiratory care including aerosol medication delivery, basic bedside pulmonary function testing, breathing exercises, oxygen therapy, arterial cannulation and arterial punctures. Provides airway management including tracheostomy care, tracheostomy tube changes, endotracheal intubations and extubations. May perform pulmonary function testing as needed.
- May be required to be on-call days, nights, weekends and holidays.
- Performs ventilator care: setup, verification of function, monitoring, and weaning techniques as appropriate to the patient’s condition.
- Maintains and improves knowledge and skills; serves as a resource to other staff and to physicians. Assists in training new staff, students, and new physicians. May assume Charge Therapist responsibilities and provide in-services as required.
- Records all pertinent patient care information per hospital and departmental policies; documents in the electronic medical record system.
- Graduate of a CAHEA-approved training program in respiratory care.
- Current license to practice respiratory care as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in North Carolina.
- Certified Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or eligible to sit for exam.
- Current BCLS certification.
- Current ACLS certification.
