The Sterile Processing Instrument Specialist, under general supervision, follows robust processes in Decontamination, Processing and Sterilization by cleaning instruments and equipment, ensuring that all items are free of bioburden, inspecting, function testing and assembling instruments for High Level Disinfection or Sterilization. The Sterile Processing Technician follows the Manufacturer's Instructions for Use in Decontamination, Processing, High Level Disinfection & Sterilization, and Department and Hospital Processes and Policies.
The role requires accurate documentation of processes in Decontamination, Processing, High Level Disinfection or Sterilization, as well as Sterile Processing Department Equipment, using written logs and/or computer systems. The technician must prioritize instrumentation for processing, answer telephones and dispatch instrumentation, equipment and supplies. Duties are performed in alignment with our Mission, Values, and Mercy Service Standards. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: High school graduate or equivalent
Experience: Minimum 12 months experience in Sterile Processing or 800 hours of hands-on experience in Sterile Processing
Certifications: Maintain CRCST or CSPDT Certification through HSPA or CBSPD by completing the annual required CEUs. Recommend obtaining additional Sterile Processing Certifications of CIS, CER &/or CHL.

- Preceptor Workshop Pre-course Curriculum (External New Hires—completion within 6 months of hire). Basic computer skills. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE). Must interact with staff across diverse disciplines. Must be able to follow directions. Must be able to operate equipment.
Physical/Work Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of the minimums required to perform all essential functions. Frequent lifting of items weighing around 25 pounds; frequent hand coordination. This position may include orthopedic tech duties such as placing patients in traction, ordering and charging bariatric supplies and rental beds, and issuing wound vacs.
