The Military Science Instructor (MSI) supports the Army ROTC contract by teaching in classroom and field settings. Instructors must demonstrate ability in military field training exercises and be able to live and instruct in field environments for extended periods.
Essential Functions (Responsibilities)- Provide military science instruction and field training per Cadet Command’s program of Instruction (POI), syllabus, and other ROTC directives in campus and field environments.
- Use mixed media and innovative teaching methods to convey learning objectives.
- Ensure proper student testing and application of theory during training and assessment events.
- Deliver training on Warrior Tasks, Battle Drills, small‑unit tactics, physical fitness, and crisis management.
- Coaching and preparation of Cadet teams for ranger challenge, drill team, and color guard competitions.
- Instruction on leader‑to‑NCO relationships in garrison and combat environments, including platoon and above levels.
- Participate in Cadet Summer Training (CST) planning and coordination, including scheduling, assignments, and on‑site support from June through mid‑August.
- Attend CST meetings with the Government.
- Revise CST assignments and schedules as needed.
- Backfill unexpected absences or vacancies.
- Handle any other CST related duties.
- Faculty development instruction as outlined in the contract.
- Assist Government personnel in marketing/recruiting efforts at orientations, college fairs, student orientations, and community events.
- Gather information for prospects and help develop hand‑out materials.
- Support events such as parades and campus tours.
- Provide information to prospects about Army ROTC participation.
- Assist with inventory and distribution of supplies.
- Transport ROTC personnel, Cadets, students, and supplies during training and recruiting events, requiring valid vehicle operator’s license, insurance, and accident‑avoidance training.
- Provide administrative and sustainment support during Cadet Summer Training.
- Assist reception and departure operations at the aerial port of embarkation.
- Assist in streaking, marshaling, and accounting for Cadets and cadre baggage.
- Synchronize ground transportation between the airport and Fort Knox.
- Enter data into supporting software programs.
- Adjust personnel assignments as enrollment changes demand.
This position does not have any direct reports.
Work EnvironmentPrimarily indoor classroom; some instruction outdoors or offsite. Recruiting events may involve travel and outdoor settings.
Physical Demands- Speak and communicate clearly.
- Demonstrate physical activities during field instruction, drills, etc.
- Travel by car, plane, or other methods to assigned events.
- Participate in recruiting and other events as assigned.
Local travel as needed; annual overnight travel for CST.
RequiredEducation and Experience
- Hold or have held commissioned/non‑commissioned officer status in the U.S. Army active component, reserve, or national guard.
- Have permanent support of at least six (6) years of active or reserve component experience.
- Temporary support of minimum four (4) years, preferably six (6) years.
- Experience must be current (within the last five years) and end with an honorable discharge or retirement.
- Meet academic institution’s instructor qualifications.
- Thorough knowledge of Army organizational structure, mission, procedures, regulations, and policies.
- Experience in military training and field training evaluations.
- Knowledge of basic Soldier skills—map reading, land navigation, marksmanship, drill and ceremonies, small‑arms weapons.
- Safety skills in handling small‑arms, ammunition, and pyrotechnics.
- Computer skills—including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Windows environments, email, and internet use.
- Teaching effectiveness in classroom and field settings, presenting standardized instruction and creative workshops.
- Demonstrated instructor ability in military field training exercises and ability to live/instruct in extended field environments.
