The SBO Billing Specialist is responsible for providing customer service and financial counseling for patient due balances (including Hospital and Physician billing services). This includes accepting inbound calls to address patient inquiries and making outbound calls to resolve patient balances.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Provide primary customer service for patient questions on patient responsible portions such as coinsurance, copays, and deductibles. Explain contractual adjustments and discounts. Resolve patient complaints or explain why services are not covered by insurance.
- Call guarantors regarding past‑due balances and process patient payments using secured devices. Provide patients with payment options including monthly payment plans and bank loan financing via a secured banking portal.
- Explain insurance‑related coverage and payment information to resolve patient inquiries for both Hospital and Physician services.
- Screen guarantors and households for financial assistance. Review and process financial assistance applications for patients seeking help with outstanding balances (deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and non‑covered balances).
- Follow HIPAA guidelines when handling patient information.
- Distinguish billing complaints from patient‑care complaints, resolve billing‑related issues, and forward any patient‑care complaints to Guest Relations.
- Reconcile business banking and credit card accounts.
- High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional training in healthcare billing or customer service preferred.
- Medical billing experience highly preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Experience with billing software and electronic data submission preferred.
- Certification / License (no specific certification listed).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to receive and express detailed information orally and visually, read and understand written directions.
- Normal mental concentration during repetitive operations for long periods.
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, and reach; occasionally lift and transport items up to 10 pounds.
- Standard office conditions with average noise; periodic exposure to fumes, chemicals, hazardous conditions, and/or disease.
