General Summary

The Nursing Shift Manager (NSM) is a professional Registered Nurse who assumes management responsibility for the unit during a shift.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Follow hospital policy regarding patient safety measures such as infection prevention, safe patient handling, and critical lab notification; monitor staff compliance and coach staff on safety standards.
• Provide quality nursing care, including medication administration and patient/family teaching, while adhering to hospital procedures; support staff on quality initiatives and monitor compliance.
• Perform initial and ongoing assessments to monitor patient status, improve quality, and provide accurate information to the healthcare team; review and cosign LPN assessments and provide feedback.
• Document accurately all patient care activities and required quality monitoring items; monitor documentation of staff and complete NSM specific paperwork such as daily sheets and staffing logs.
• Communicate with physicians, team members, patients, and families to improve outcomes; provide service recovery when needed and communicate unit needs to the director.
• Delegate appropriately to team members while fostering teamwork and accountability; provide professional feedback and adapt to change.

Education

• Graduate from an accredited school of nursing (required).
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred).

Work Experience

• One year of registered nursing experience preferred.

Certification/License

• Current RN license in Missouri or Compact Licensure.
• Graduate nurses must obtain licensure within 90 days of graduation.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support.

Mental/Physical Requirements

• Considerable mental concentration required.
• Lifting up to 35 lbs.; turning, walking, standing, and frequently moving required.

Working Conditions

• Frequent exposure to infectious disease and communicable disease via blood and fluids.
• Potential for hostile persons at times.
• Minimal physical discomfort.
