Department of Cultures and Civilizations
Marina Garbellotti invites scholars to present expressions of interest in applying jointly with Marina Garbellotti for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA-PF) on Women and madness in the 19th century .
My current research focuses on the relationship between justice, motherhood and female madness in the nineteenth century. In particular, I am studying women accused of infanticide, whose sentences were often commuted because, according to the medical understanding of the time, pregnancy and childbirth caused a temporary state of madness. In the culture of the time, it was considered unacceptable for a healthy woman to refuse to have children.
I am interested in case and comparative studies.
