The Animal Production and Health Division (NSA) promotes and facilitates the sustainable development of the livestock sector, integrating scientific, technical expertise and policy advice. It hosts technical networks in areas of animal genetics, feed and pastoralism, among others. It provides analysis and technical assistance, and facilitates policy dialogue (including intergovernmental bodies).
The assignment is located in the Sustainable Animal Production, Feed and Genetics Branch (NSAP). The branch generates information and manages knowledge, facilitates the development and implementation of innovative solutions, and provides technical expertise to improve productivity, efficiency and resilience of livestock production. The activities of the branch cover all production systems, from pastoralism to industrial, including crop‑livestock integrated systems; and aim to enhance their sustainability.
The Animal Production Specialist will work under the direct supervision of the NSAP Animal Production Officer, and in close consultation and collaboration with relevant colleagues at FAO HQ and decentralized offices and partners.
Enhance the sustainability and resilience of livestock production systems, especially of small-scale livestock producers.
Responsibilities
Provide expertise and support the design and implementation of FAO field projects in livestock sector development;
Contribute to/edit FAO reports, manuals, guidelines, other specialized publications as they relate to animal production, feeding and genetics;
Collect, compile and analyze data/information related to animal production, feeding and genetics;
Support the organization of training and events;
Perform any other duties in agreement with the Animal Production Officer.
Minimum Requirements
University degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Agriculture, or a relevant field.
At least one year of relevant experience in livestock sector development.
For consultants:
Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese or Russian. For PSAs:
Working knowledge of English.
Technical & Functional Skills
Extent and relevance of experience in livestock sector development;
Extent and relevance of experience in the preparation, editing and revision of technical/scientific documents related to livestock sector development;
Extent and relevance of experience in collecting technical information and data;
Extent and relevance of experience in writing project-related documents and reports;
Understanding of FAO policies and programmes is considered a strong asset.
