Job Description
The Programme Officer will assist in the delivery of FAO’s work on biodiversity mainstreaming at global, regional and national levels and will ensure the overall coordination of the "Agri‑NBSAPs Support Initiative" and "Mainstreaming biodiversity into agrifood systems to implement NBSAPs" projects.
Organizational Setting
The Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment (OCB) coordinates the implementation of the FAO Strategy on Mainstreaming Biodiversity across Agricultural Sectors and its 2024‑27 Action Plan, supports FAO’s participation in CBD processes and leads the "Agri‑NBSAPs Support Initiative".
Reporting Lines
The Programme Officer reports to the Senior Natural Resources Officer, OCBD.
Technical Focus
Support planning, development and implementation of projects on biodiversity mainstreaming across agricultural sectors, and effective quality control and timely management of project activities.
Support comprehensive technical, analytical and/or policy analysis and development of specialized tools, methodologies, systems and/or databases.
Support strategic policy and analytical support to biodiversity‑related matters.
Key Functions
Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects; monitor and analyse programme/project development and implementation; ensure prioritisation, coordination with stakeholders and timely follow‑up.
Review relevant documents and reports; identify problems and issues; propose corrective actions; liaise with relevant parties; track follow‑up actions.
Assist in policy development, review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of impact evaluation studies.
Prepare written outputs including background papers, analyses, report sections, publications.
Undertake outreach activities; conduct training workshops, seminars; present on assigned topics.
Coordinate budget and funding activities; prepare programmes, progress reports, financial statements.
Perform any other duties as required.
Specific Functions
Liaise with relevant FAO Divisions/Offices/Centres to facilitate project implementation.
Monitor and analyse policy, legal and technical developments of other international fora in biodiversity, climate change, agriculture and environment.
Participate in various governmental and private/Civil society biodiversity forums.
Coordinate and supervise technical and operational implementation of the "Agri‑NBSAPs Support Initiative" and "Mainstreaming biodiversity into agrifood systems to implement NBSAPs".
Monitor and report on progress and achievement of results; develop programmatic and financial documentation; supervise and monitor budget.
Support selection of service providers and implementing partners; draft agreements and support workshops.
Provide guidance, technical back‑stopping and methodological support to national project officers and consultants.
Coordinate and implement global activities and deliverables.
Contribute to raising awareness and visibility of the biodiversity projects.
Contribute to the development of knowledge sharing tools, technical briefs, case studies, best practices.
Provide technical inputs to set up and maintain web pages.
Develop project proposals and contribute to resource mobilisation.
Provide advice to OCB management and support events and meetings.
