Job Description Summary
The Lewis University Police Department is a trained, professional organization committed to providing a safe and secure educational and working environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors. The Campus Police Officer is a member of the Police Department professional staff. The function of the Campus Police Officer is to maintain security and safety for assigned areas, effectively respond to requests for service and enforce applicable state and local laws in addition to University policies.
Campus Police Officers are an integral part of the department's overall community policing strategy. Campus Police Officers are part of the University's team of first responders equipped to assist in various emergency and non-emergency situations.

Responsibilities
Responsible to model the University Mission through dedicated job performance, service excellence to constituents, respectful collaboration and active support of the University's Catholic and Lasallian Mission.
-Act as one of the University's first responders equipped to assist in various emergency and non-emergency situations.
-React quickly and calmly to emergency situations by determining an appropriate course of action and ensuring an appropriate response utilizing tact, diplomacy and good judgment to resolve the issue.
-Conduct investigations at the scenes of crimes and accidents by gathering evidence; locating and questioning witnesses and giving aid and support to victims.
-Appropriately utilize computerized law enforcement records systems.
-Provide first aid including CPR and utilization of an AED.
-Understand basic emergency response principles.
-Respond to and investigate fire and burglar alarm activations.
-Assist in implementation of the University Emergency Operations Plan as prescribed.
-Participate in routine patrol and security activities.
-Provide campus wide police patrol on foot and in vehicles to protect the University's students, faculty, staff, real property and equipment.
-Investigate any observed disturbances, irregularities, hazards or suspicious circumstances.
-Investigate calls for service of a non-criminal nature, and assess individual cases to determine appropriate action.
-Complete special investigations as assigned.
-Mediate disputes involving community members.
-Actively assist and collaborate with other police, fire and public safety agencies as necessary.
-Provide functional supervision to student workers and Campus Safety Officers as assigned.
-Operate and service department vehicles safely and in compliance with all applicable Illinois Vehicle Code provisions and University policy.
-Perform individual post functions as set forth in department orders including checking, locking and opening University buildings and offices.
-Provide motorist assistance such as vehicle unlocks and jump-starts.
-Develop an extensive knowledge of the University, its policies, locations of building, geography and personnel, organizational structure, traffic flow, and problem areas.
-Conduct requested and self-initiated security inspections to assist in environmental management for better security.
-Provide security escorts to students and others upon request.
-Perform crowd control duties as necessary during special events or emergency incidents.
-Safely regulate vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow.
-Enforcement of State and local laws and University policy.
-Enforce University Behavioral standards and policies firmly, tactfully, equally, and with respect for the rights of others.
-Apprehend and arrest suspects for felony or misdemeanor offenses in accordance with State statutes and departmental procedures.
-Enforce traffic and parking regulations as prescribed by applicable Illinois Vehicle Code provisions and University policy.
