LATERAL TRANSFER OPPORTUNITY FOR DPSST-CERTIFIED LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS
Position enforces the laws of this state and county and provides residents with law enforcement and social services as prescribed by Oregon law, county ordinance, and judicial precedent.
Full-time 40-hour per week position. Includes benefits such as medical, vision, dental, long-term disability, basic life coverage, and County-paid PERS retirement after waiting periods.
Lateral hires receive 80 hours of vacation and sick leave at hire, with subsequent accrual per County policy and Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Onsite childcare at a discounted rate through Roseburg Professional Childcare (Fowler St. location) is available, subject to waitlist.
This union position is represented by Douglas County Law Enforcement Association.
A hiring list will be created for future Patrol Deputy openings, based on qualifications and testing. No guarantee of future openings.
Certified law enforcement personnel may request lateral transfer. Requests are reviewed by Command Staff, and decisions are made accordingly. Applicants are processed by application date. All lateral deputies serve a 12- to 18-month probationary period, during which termination can occur without recourse.
EssentialJob Duties:
- Enforce laws, serve court documents, enforce traffic laws, operate emergency vehicles, stop vehicles and pedestrians, inspect vehicles, serve warrants, arrest suspects, write reports, interpret legal decisions, use a computer, and operate firearms and non-lethal weapons accurately under stress.
Requires regular attendance.
Marginal functions include:- Processing information, problem recognition, law enforcement analysis, maintaining composure, making decisions, testifying, participating in enforcement activities, supporting agencies, responding to nuisance complaints, providing public information, processing found property, searching for missing persons, mediating disputes. Must possess current Oregon DPSST certification and be employed as a law enforcement officer with at least two years of full-time service. Only applicants who can pass an extensive background check should apply.
Work involves field and vehicle operations, requiring physical activities like bending, gripping, hearing, keyboarding, lifting, reaching, running, and long periods of standing or walking on rough terrain. Driving is frequent. Environment includes risks such as dust, extreme temperatures, noise, and contagious diseases.
Application review involves Command staff discussion. Qualified candidates undergo:
- Background Investigation
- Psychological Evaluation
- Physical Testing
Applicants may be disqualified at any phase.
The selection process includes qualifications review, interview, background check, psychological test, physical exam, and drug screen. Employment is contingent on passing a drug test and medical exam at county expense. Presence of non-prescribed drugs, including marijuana, leads to disqualification.
