General Summary Of Position

Provides non-clinical services intended to aid patients in establishing recovery from high risk of dependent alcohol and drug use problems. Works with a team at a Med Star Health Facility that provides peer support and motivation to encourage patients who are seeking treatment for alcohol or drug dependency and addiction issues. Assists in completing referrals to treatment services and developing service plans to promote successful linkage to treatment services.

Services will be provided in the Med Star Health Facility with appropriate follow-up.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities
  • Acts as a peer support throughout the hospitalization and post-discharge as appropriate to facilitate attainment of goals.
  • Acts as a resource to other clinical team members on recovery support.
  • Assist patient and family with understanding how to utilize these community services.
  • Assists patients in linking to community support services and substance treatment services including securing appointment and transportation.
  • Attends required staff and other meetings.
  • Completes required documentation and other reports.
  • Conducts brief interventions to patients that screen positive for alcohol and/or drug use.
  • Consults with nursing staff social work as requested even if patient does not screen positive.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Identifies patient's history of drug/alcohol use treatment history motivation to change behavior and other needs for community support services.
  • Identifies patient's readiness to change and use motivational interviewing techniques and other communication skills to support a plan for reducing or eliminating harmful drug and/or alcohol use.
  • Models coping techniques and self-help strategies.
  • Notifies patient's nurse before visiting the patient.
  • Participates in trainings to continually gain new skills.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
  • Provides family members with recovery support materials.
  • Provides telephone outreach to patients to assist with linkages and continued peer support. Telephones treatment providers to verify patient showed up for appointment; and follow-up by telephone with any patient that misses an appointment.
  • Works with hospital staff and social workers to identify community support services.
  • Staffs community events and activities as needed.
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required or equivalent.
  • Residency within the target population preferred.
  • Peer Recovery Specialist Certification by the State of Maryland or the District of Columbia required.
Experience
  • 1-2 years related experience as a peer recovery coach.
  • Must be actively engaged in his/her own recovery program with a minimum of three years demonstrated personal recovery and sustained abstinence from alcohol and/or drug use with no relapses.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Cert Peer Recovery Specialist - CPRS Peer Recovery Specialist Certification by the State of Maryland or the District of Columbia required.

  • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills the ability to relate to patients and health professionals as well as an ability to develop professional working relationships with partner agencies.
  • Must possess excellent listening verbal and written communication skills as well as good problem-solving skills.
  • Personal knowledge of the target population as shown by residency in that neighborhood.

  • Care coordination skills.
  • Motivative interviewing skills to promote healthy behavior change.

This position has a hiring range of

USD $22.48 - USD $39.75 /Hr.
