Department: Physician Practice - Cardiology
Location: 9105 Franklin Square Dr Baltimore, Maryland 21237
Status: Full-time, 40 hours per week, Non-exempt
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8am - 5pm
Hiring range: USD $19.55 - $34.25 per hour
Summary of PositionThe Medical Assistant performs clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory care setting under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Duties may include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, measurement and documentation of vital signs, and assisting providers with patient exams. The role may float to other sites within the system.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities- Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality and safety standards; complies with governmental regulations and accreditation standards.
- Assists providers with patient preparation for examinations, minor office procedures, and education of patients; supports the clinical care team to ensure optimal patient flow and manages variable patient volume.
- Provides clerical support and serves as backup for the Patient Services Coordinator as needed.
- Participates in daily team huddles to review and prepare for scheduled patient visits; screens all patients for preventative care needs and potential fall risk.
- Conducts motivational interviews and disease‑management coaching; identifies potential behavioral health needs using screening tools and notifies providers.
- Reports actual and potential problems concerning patients, families, and associates using Med Star Health reporting protocols; participates in performance improvement initiatives.
- Maintains compliance with accreditation and quality/safety standards by monitoring temperature logs, medication supplies, and emergency equipment.
- Engages in population‑management activities, supports patient self‑management, and captures information to improve care.
- Performs patient and laboratory testing consistent with scope of practice including point‑of‑care testing, skin testing, ECG, pulmonary function tests, vision and hearing testing, and removal of sutures/staples.
- Documents clinical activities in the EMR and performs required follow‑up (e.g., pap smears, HIV, mammograms).
- Provides escort and discharge assistance; chaperones patients per policy.
- Handles infection prevention duties such as light cleaning and equipment sanitation; updates records of equipment maintenance and manages supplies.
- Provides telephone screening services and determines appropriate disposition per protocols.
- Under direct physician supervision may insert and monitor IV and urinary catheters, administer oral meds, and perform limited injections; may perform phlebotomy.
- Uses EMR to propose medication refills and completes requisitions for tests; contacts insurance for pre‑authorizations.
- Floats to additional sites as needed.
- Attends scheduled meetings and training sessions (safety, infection control, OSHA, CLIA, BLS).
- Demonstrates behavior consistent with Med Star Health mission, vision, and SPIRIT values.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.
- Less than 1.5 years of experience in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent required; externship experience strongly preferred.
- For Cardiology offices: at least 6 months experience in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent required, or a Bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology/science related major, or successful completion of a cardiac technician course.
- Prior medical assistant experience preferred.
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) within one year required.
- CPR – BLS and NRP within 90 days required.
- Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department.
- Clinical competency verified within the 90‑day orientation period and annually thereafter.
- Excellent customer service and patient interaction skills.
- Basic computer skills preferred.
