Pharmacy Technician at Med Star Health
General Summary of PositionThe Pharmacy Technician assists pharmacists in all areas of pharmacy operations including prescription preparation, sales transactions, customer service, purchasing, and inventory. Primary Duties And Responsibilities- Organizes prescription orders on the counter in priority order, retrieves labels from the printer, arranges paperwork and labels, and manages stock from the shelf.
- Performs phone and face‑to‑face customer service functions such as taking refill requests, new prescriptions, calling doctors for refill authorizations and pre‑authorizations, and troubleshooting patient questions and concerns.
- Prepares prescriptions for dispensing: counts and verifies medication labels and vials appropriately, prioritizes waiters.
- Processes cash, check, credit card, and payroll deduction transactions; secures signatures; ensures compliance with HIPAA; prepares delivery tickets; reconciles delivery transactions; performs end‑of‑day register procedures; runs daily cash reports and completes deposits as assigned.
- Processes refills and performs data entry of new prescriptions (demographics, insurance plans, prescription information) under pharmacist supervision and according to policy; brings to the pharmacist any claims requiring overrides or interventions; troubleshoots insurance claim rejects and follows up on problem prescriptions.
- Receives checks and organizes daily orders; returns medication to the shelf after filling; follows established inventory management procedures; participates in physical inventory at intervals determined by management.
- Greets customers immediately (in person or via telephone) and performs intake of refill requests and new prescriptions; gathers patient demographics and insurance information; clearly marks and prioritizes waiting customers; monitors the waiting room to keep customers informed.
- Participates in meetings, committees, and represents the department and hospital in community outreach; participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
- High School Diploma or GED required
- 6 months pharmacy technician experience in a retail setting or equivalent training required
- Must have successfully completed the pharmacy technician certification through the nationally accredited certification examination of PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) within 180 days required, or the ExCPT (Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians) within 180 days required, and pharmacy technician licensure or registration as required by the state where the pharmacy is located.
USD 19.55 – USD 34.25 per hour.
