  • Schedule: Saturday - Sunday, 7:00am - 3:00pm
Summary

The Program Assistant (PA) will provide essential 24-hour awake coverage and is responsible for the day- to-day operations of the shelter. This position is responsible for the welfare, safety and comfort, as well as daily support to the shelter guests. The PA will provide crisis intervention to callers seeking shelter, resources, or referrals. The PA works closely with clients, case managers, and other essential shelter staff to ensure that guests' needs are met with dignity and care, empowering them to transition toward stability and self-sufficiency.

Primary

Duties
  • Assures that Daily/Weekly/Monthly schedule of housekeeping maintenance tasks are completed in a satisfactory and timely manner.
  • Assigns volunteer tasks to guests of the Emergency Shelter and supports guests to make sure the tasks are carried out satisfactorily.
  • Ensures the safety and security of guests, volunteers, visitors and staff by communicating guest expectations and conducting internal and external perimeter checks during shift.
  • Promptly and effectively respond to potential emergencies which may occur at the shelter by following agency and shelter protocols.
  • Ensures children are being supervised by their parents and encourages children and youth to participate in organized activities.
  • Assumes responsibility for observing when maintenance supplies need re‑ordering and informs supervisors accordingly.
  • Supports daily scheduled resident activities and events.
  • Assist clients with daily activities of living, including meal distribution and clean up, resource navigation, and transportation coordination.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate records by ensuring residents sign in upon entry, tracking attendance, and addressing any discrepancies to support efficient shelter operations.
  • Mediates interpersonal conflicts between guests, and ensures a peaceful and respectful atmosphere.
Secondary Duties
  • Assumes responsibility for storing maintenance supplies in proper location and keeping an adequate supply available for daily use. Completes daily maintenance checklist.
  • Observes where repairs/replacements may be needed and reports to immediate supervisor for direction and follow‑up.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and upkeep of the emergency shelter by performing routine cleaning tasks, maintaining sanitary conditions in common areas and restrooms.
  • Assists with the pick‑up of donations and food orders as needed.
  • Completes incident reports when necessary.
  • Assists with and attends special events held by the Center and St. Vincent de Paul as necessary.
  • Supports a welcoming and positive environment for volunteers and works with them effectively.
  • Upholds the vision, mission and values of St. Vincent de Paul.
  • Attends, and as necessary represents St. Vincent de Paul in, external meetings and events.
  • Stays awake and alert during their on‑duty hours.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, within the scope of the position.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Ability and willingness to relate with others in a respectful manner and work well as a team member.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries with program participants and refer them to case management staff.
  • Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of persons who are materially poor and/or homeless, and the ability to be comfortable working with persons of all socioeconomic, religious, and ethnic backgrounds in a non‑judgmental manner.
  • An understanding and respect for the confidentiality of clients.
  • Ability to organize oneself, one’s work, and other persons sufficiently to accomplish the required daily tasks.
  • Knowledge of floor and building maintenance; basic handyperson skills.
