The Shop Welder / Fabricator is a highly skilled combo welder responsible for fabricating and welding metal pressure-retaining components as specified by drawings, blueprints, and diagrams. This role requires proficiency in MIG, TIG, Flux Core, and Stick welding techniques, with a strong understanding of pressure vessel welding standards. The ideal candidate can work independently or as part of a team and is committed to safety, quality, and meeting production goals in a fast-paced shop environment.

Main Responsibilities
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and diagrams to determine welding requirements.
  • Follow company safety policies and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Perform various welding techniques including MIG, TIG, Flux Core, and Stick welding.
  • Operate welding equipment such as gas torches, welding machines, and fabrication tools.
  • Grind, file, and sand welds, seams, joints, and rough surfaces to required finish.
  • Inspect completed welds to ensure conformance with specifications and quality standards.
  • Maintain welding equipment and keep the work area clean and organized.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Foreman.
Individual Quality and Safety Responsibilities
  • Comply with all STATS and/or client quality, safety, and environmental management systems and procedures at all times.
  • Immediately report all accidents, incidents, near misses, or hazards to your manager or foreman and complete the required documentation
  • Do not perform any task unless you have been properly trained and authorized to do so - when in doubt, stop and ask.
Internal Training Requirements

As well as the essential minimum Experience and Qualifications requirements for you joining STATS (as detailed above in this Job Description) the internal training is tailored to complement each individual’s main responsibilities of this role. You will be assigned a skills profile at the time of hire, and this will include the additional training requirements to that of your Experience and Qualifications.

The Skills Profile categories for your role are as follows:

  • Tool and equipment training relevant to your duties
  • Recommended development aligned with your position

This ensures all employees receive the support, knowledge, skills and resources needed to succeed in your position. Additional training requirements will be discussed with your line manager and may form part of the CPD process.

Experience / Competence / Skills / Knowledge
  • Proficient in MIG, TIG, Flux Core, and Stick welding techniques.
  • Knowledge of welding symbols and ability to interpret blueprints and drawings.
  • Ability to pass a 6GR welding test.
  • Skilled in independently fitting and assembling components for welding.
  • Experience welding pressure vessels or pressure-retaining equipment.
QUALIFICATIONs
  • 3–10 years of experience in welding, pipe fitting, and fabrication.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
  • Proficient in operating and maintaining welding machines and related equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot welding issues and identify practical solutions.
