Job SummaryThe PRN Staff Radiation Therapist in the Radiation Oncology Department applies ionizing radiation to a diverse population of patients in accordance with the prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist. The role requires operating radiation‑producing equipment with strict radiation safety measures and performing a series of complex and precise technical procedures.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions- Participates in Quality Control monitoring.
- Delivers consistent precise therapy to a designated treatment area.
- Demonstrates skill in patient assessment, performing procedures and providing specialty care to patients, considering age (adolescent, adult, geriatrics).
- Documents appropriately in Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Demonstrates a willingness to perform additional tasks and assists others as needed.
- Recognizes own limitations or needs and seeks assistance as required.
- Reports adverse reactions to the physician immediately and follows policy and procedure (P/P) for documentation.
- Educates patient/family on expected side effects, use of blocks, wedges, and other treatment aids.
- Follows P/P to ensure precise treatment per physician prescription.
- Follows P/P to ensure precise treatment per physicist’s instruction in chart or computer.
- Understands and completes all patient set‑ups correctly, including simulating new patients and/or new treatment fields without errors and following the physician’s written order in EMR.
- Schedules patients appropriately and informs them of any changes prior to implementation.
- Assesses patient mobility and manages accordingly, consulting EMR for fall precautions.
- Wears radiation safety badges at all times.
- Practices universal precautions.
- Participates in daily warm‑up procedures to ensure output is within tolerances.
- Advises the manager of any discrepancies and any material item requiring replacement or repair as soon as possible.
- Performs other tasks as assigned.
- Participates in on‑call rotation.
- Acts as a student clinical instructor for both RTT and RTR students, evaluating and giving feedback to students and the Clinical Advisor.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
- Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Minimum Education
- Associate’s Degree
- Graduate from an accredited Radiation Therapy program
- Graduate from an accredited Radiologic Technology School (JRCERT)
- ARRT‑T – ARRT Radiation Therapy
- BLS – Basic Life Support or BLS‑I – Basic Life Support Instructor
Minimum 1 year experience in Radiation Therapy (clinical experience may be included).
Required Minimum Skills- Demonstrates ability to treat/simulate patients.
