Purpose and ScopeThe Inpatient RN provides direct patient care in accordance with company policies and procedures, including FMCNA compliance programs and contracted hospital policies. Areas of practice include hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapies, apheresis, and ultrafiltration. The RN partners with the hospital to deliver quality care and a positive patient experience.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities- Under limited supervision, applies knowledge to perform broad tasks including direct patient care in multiple modalities.
- Supervises Patient Care Technicians and clerical staff; directs ICU staff for CRRT.
- Responsible for direct patient care of assigned patients in the Inpatient Renal Replacement and Apheresis Services setting, following appropriate treatment protocols.
- Assesses patient responses to treatment, makes adjustments, and communicates issues to the Program Manager, physician, and other staff.
- Delivers safe, effective care in a timely, efficient manner.
- Provides organized, concise shift reports and manages patient schedules during labs, orders, or assessments.
- Manages intradialytic transfusions, including documentation and adverse reaction notification.
- Collaborates with physicians and the healthcare team to coordinate daily care plans.
- Initiates communication with FMS facility nursing staff and hospital personnel as needed.
- Accurately documents all treatment information in ACES and hospital records.
- Cleans and disinfects dialysis equipment and surrounding areas between treatments.
- Prepares dialysis machines and conducts pre-treatment alarm testing.
- Initiates Solution Delivery System, operates equipment safely, and troubleshoots as necessary.
- Conducts and documents machine safety tests, calibrations, and disinfection per FMS policies.
- Participates in QAI activities, staff meetings, training, and orientation.
- Acts as a subject matter expert for dialysis-related complications.
- Reports incidents, complaints, or problems per Adverse Event Report requirements.
- Maintains compliance with the Code of Business Conduct and all applicable laws and regulations.
- Assists with projects assigned by the supervisor.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Must take Ishihara’s Color Blindness test; accommodations considered for those who fail.
- Direct patient care with travel between hospitals and regional meetings.
- On‑call rotation including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Potential exposure to infectious materials and diseases.
- Regularly involves heavy lifting and moving of patients and equipment up to 200 lbs with assistance.
- Provides supervision and direction of Patient Care Technicians and clerical staff; directs ICU staff for CRRT.
- Current state licensure.
- Maintains knowledge of advancements in nephrology, especially inpatient care.
- Must meet state practice requirements.
- Certification in Nephrology Nursing, Apheresis Nursing, or both encouraged.
- One year RN experience required.
- Minimum 6 months nephrology experience before independent practice with dialysis or Apheresis RNs.
- Strong assessment skills for critically ill patients.
- ICU experience preferred.
- Completion of ESRD patient care training (Progressive Renal Education Preparation).
- BLS CPR recognition.
- ACLS CPR recognition preferred.
- Organizational and time‑management skills, with commitment to continuing education.
- Leadership skills for directing others.
- Completion of Nurses Technical Training.
