Public Health is a Division of the New Mexico Department of Health. The Southeast Region Public Health Division consists of 8 counties with 10 public health offices. Each office houses diverse staff members offering services promoting healthy behaviors to have a better quality of life.
Why does the job exist?
This position will provide medical oversight and leadership to clinical staff in the local public health offices in the Southeast Region. Perform clinical services such as Medication for Opiate Use Disorders (MOUD) for those experiencing opioid use disorder, family planning, sexually transmitted diseases, breast and cervical cancer screening and tuberculosis. This would include scheduling office hours as needed for clinical coverage.
This also requires providing consultation to staff which includes the public health nurses, nurse practitioners, disease intervention staff, among other staff in public health. Respond to disease outbreaks and oversee appropriate response. Conduct regular chart reviews and follow up on results as indicated. Oversee subordinate staff and conduct evaluations for the Infectious Disease Nurse Epidemiologist and Nurse Practitioner(s).
How does it get done?
Travel for this position is critical in most cases to perform clinical duties and also based on outbreak investigations. Communication is critical and is performed by phone and email to provide oversight for specific clinical questions.

For the residents for the Southeast Region of the state.
Ideal Candidate
Have a background in public health; experience working with community partners; and understanding of health systems and their function.
Minimum Qualification
Requires an MD or DO, licensure and certification to practice in New Mexico and two (2) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above licensure/certification requirements and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
- Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
- Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certification from the State of New Mexico, or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
- Unrestricted New Mexico Medical Licensure.
Working Conditions
Office setting, clinics, home visits as needed.
