Position: ROAD MAINTENANCE II

POSITION SUMMARY

This is a skilled heavy automotive and construction equipment operator position. Employee is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all road construction equipment utilized by the Road Department. Employees do not exercise full supervisory responsibility, but do exercise lead responsibilities on the job site regarding subordinate employees on road construction and maintenance projects. The work originates from specific work assignments and is reviewed periodically by an immediate supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operates a variety of equipment including the following: front-end loader, dump truck, tank truck, pick-up truck, tractor, brush hog, backhoe, service truck, pneumatic roller, tandem truck, steel wheel roller bulldozer, motor grader, bottom dump truck, transport truck and crane.
  • Responsible for safe operation of all automotive and construction equipment utilized by the county road department.
  • This work may involve on site supervision of subordinate employees on road construction and maintenance projects and extends to the responsibility for safe and efficient operation of assigned equipment and persons. Employee does not exercise full supervisory responsibility but does exercise lead responsibility on the job site.
  • Responsibilities include routine servicing and preventative maintenance of all automotive and construction equipment utilized by the County Road Department.
  • Employee may be required to train new employees in the proper, safe and efficient operation of construction equipment.
  • Repairs, constructs, scrapes, cleans, and fills a wide range of County-owned hard surface and dirt roads, and ditches.
  • Removes snow from county-owned roads when warranted by weather conditions.
  • Digs, grades, and places culverts and cattle guards at various property entrances, or under County-owned roads.
  • Mows weeds and picks up trash when indicated.
  • Hauls and removes dirt and gravel from county-owned roads.
  • Repair, place and install traffic control devices as directed.
  • Uses tank truck to wet down dusty or hard road surfaces.
  • Patches hard road surfaces.
  • Utilizes the following hand operated tools; shovel, rake, axe, pick, pitchfork, chain saw, digging bars, hand-held weed trimmer, sledgehammer, and told (e.g., hammer, screwdriver, wrenches), tamper, jackhammer, auger, and cutting torch.
  • Responsible for preparing and submitting required reports by supervisory personnel.
  • Must know and understand County Personnel Policy and all County Departmental policies pertinent to the position.
  • Employee must perform all duties with minimal supervision. Employee may be required to work
  • Irregular hours, attend job-related meetings, and perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY CONTROL
  • This position performs under the general supervision of the Road Foreman who may provide assignments and instruction, determines objective, priorities and deadlines, and who assists the employee with unusual situations. The employee uses own initiative and judgment to perform work in an independent and timely manner in accordance with precedents and established policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education/Training/

    Experience:

    High school diploma or G.E.D.; 4 years’ experience operating road equipment
  • Experience Substitution: Graduation from a vocational college in equipment operation may be substituted for two years of experience.
  • Licenses/Certification: Valid N.M. Class A CDL with a good driving record.
  • Desirable

    Qualifications:

  • Other: Post offer Drug Analysis Test and/or pre-employment physical. Driver’s license, Employment and criminal Background Investigation.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • Must be able to operate with considerable skill all equipment utilized by the Road Department.
  • Must have considerable knowledge of the capabilities, limitations and hazards involved in the operation of heavy automotive and construction equipment.
  • Must have knowledge of preventative maintenance procedures and minor repair procedures for heavy automotive and construction equipment.
  • Must have ability to train others in the safe and efficient operation of equipment.
