Job Summary

The post holder will be responsible for assisting the Mental Health Act Administrator in processing the Mental Health Act documentation and liaising with colleagues within all the Mental Health Act Offices of the Trust. The role involves maintaining a high standard in the management and monitoring of the requirements of the MHA 1983 (as amended 2007) for patients within the Trust's services, providing advice and guidance on Mental Health Legislation to all disciplines, and facilitating the smooth running of Mental Health Tribunals and Hospital Managers' hearings.

They should be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people and agencies, coordinate several work streams, and maintain a high level of accuracy for each task. The post holder must work to deadlines, use their own initiative, and continually prioritise their workload.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure confidentiality and high standards in record keeping and storage of all records (paper and electronic).
  • Initial scrutiny of detention papers under the supervision of the MHA Administrator to ensure lawful detentions.
  • Process and input the Mental Health Act data into the Trust's electronic patient record (Systm One) in compliance with data protection guidance.
  • Notify in writing all relevant parties of a detention under the Mental Health Act, including the patient’s nearest relative where consent is given.
  • Assist with the collation of statistical information on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis.
  • Generate Section Expiry / Treatment Expiry lists from Systm One and the Trust's reporting system.
  • Oversee and monitor arrangements made for appeals to the Mental Health Tribunal.
Qualifications
  • English and Maths at level 2 or equivalent (GCSE 9‑4 or A*-C or functional skills level
    2).
  • NVQ level 2 or equivalent in a related subject.
  • NVQ level 3 in a related subject or willingness to undertake a relevant Level 3 Apprenticeship.
  • RSA II Typing or Word Processing or equivalent.
  • Computer Studies qualification.
  • Certificate in Mental Health Law, Policy & Practice.

Apprenticeship pathway available for candidates who do not hold a Level 3 qualification.

Experience
  • Previous administrative experience.
  • Experience of working with Microsoft Office and accessing the internet.
  • Experience with office procedures such as filing, photocopying, message taking, and typing.
  • Experience in arranging meetings, including meeting servicing.
  • Experience working with a range of staff and services.
  • Experience with Systm One or similar patient records.
Knowledge
  • Mental Health Act Law, Policy and Practice.
Skills
