McLaren Automotive Limited are looking for a Composites Apprentice to complete the Level 3 Composites Technician apprenticeship. We are looking for highly‑motivated individuals to join our expanding production team to produce components for the range of McLaren high‑performance sports cars. As a composite apprentice, you will assist in the design, tooling, moulding, lay‑up, curing and production of composite products for McLaren Performance Road cars.
You will work under the supervision of experienced technicians and engineers, learning the necessary skills and knowledge to become a proficient composite technician.
- Understand and follow detailed work instructions / SOP’s
- Ensure that all station operations are complete to the required quality standard
- Ensure that all operations are complete in the required timescale (Takt time)
- Work as part of a team on the definition and solution of problems that may be affecting the quality, cost, or productivity
- Attend the workplace regularly and inform the Team Leader of any lateness or unplanned absence promptly
- Ensure the work area is clean, tidy, and orderly, always in line with McLaren expectations
- Maintain a safe working environment for yourself and team members
- Participate in continuous improvement activities as requested
- Understand and adhere to the McLaren Values and help grow the company
- Assist with the design and manufacture of composite materials, including lay‑up, cutting, bonding, and curing
- Operate and maintain equipment used in composite production, such as cutting tools, vacuum pumps and autoclaves
- Assist in the preparation of moulds and tooling for composite parts
- Learn and follow safety procedures and regulations
- Keep track of inventory and order supplies as necessary
- Collaborate with other team members to meet project deadlines and quality standards
- Conduct tests and inspections to ensure the quality of finished products
- Maintain accurate records of production activities and materials used
- Good hand‑eye coordination and attention to detail
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Willingness to learn and follow instructions
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift heavy objects and work in a variety of conditions
- Basic maths and computer skills
- Effective communication and problem‑solving skills
- Interest in composite materials and manufacturing
- Take pride in their work and have a process‑driven work ethic

Training scheduleDuring the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield full‑time for an initial block of study. You will return to your workplace one Friday per month. After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre one day a week to undertake knowledge study; the remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.
Qualificationrequirements
Advanced apprenticeships entry requirements
- GCSE English language C or 4 or above
- GCSE Maths C or 4 or above
Applicants must also successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, and a recruitment and selection process to secure a place on the apprenticeship programme.
