We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to join our Homelessness Team as a Homelessness Prevention and Resettlement Officer specialising in supporting people leaving prison, based at Riverside House in Rotherham.

This is a unique and rewarding role at a pivotal time for homelessness services. You will be at the forefront of delivering meaningful change under the Homelessness Reduction Act, helping individuals leaving custody to secure safe, stable accommodation and rebuild their lives within the community.

You will work closely alongside a dedicated colleague who also specialises in prison release, as well as being part of the wider, supportive homelessness team—giving you the opportunity to share knowledge, develop your skills, and contribute to a collaborative approach to complex cases.

This role offers the chance to develop specialist skills in a challenging but highly rewarding area of work, where your input will have a direct and lasting impact.

Are you motivated by making a difference? Do you bring strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, along with a proactive and solution-focused approach? Are you looking to be part of a supportive team where your work truly matters? If so, we would love to hear from you.

Previous applicants need not apply.

About the Role
  • Work proactively with prisons, probation services, and partner agencies to resolve homelessness for individuals on release from custody
  • Develop and coordinate resettlement plans to ensure accommodation is secured prior to or immediately following release
  • Prevent homelessness by enabling customers to remain in accommodation where appropriate
  • Assist individuals to access suitable housing options when homelessness cannot be prevented
  • Provide specialist advice on housing, rights, and entitlements for people leaving prison
  • Carry out detailed assessments to understand customers’ needs, risks, and support requirements
  • Manage a caseload of complex clients, many with multiple support needs
  • Work collaboratively with external partners including probation, prisons, support providers, and health services
  • Contribute to reducing rough sleeping and reoffending by promoting stable housing outcomes
  • Provide an effective, professional homelessness service on behalf of the Council
What We’re Looking For
  • A positive team player with a collaborative and flexible approach
  • Experience of working with offenders, prison leavers, or individuals with complex needs (desirable but not essential)
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills
  • The ability to manage challenging situations and build trust with vulnerable individuals
  • Commitment to delivering a high-quality housing options and prevention service
  • Creativity and persistence in identifying housing solutions in complex circumstances
  • An understanding of homelessness legislation and/or criminal justice pathways (or willingness to learn)

Whilst we welcome applications from candidates with housing experience, we also encourage those with transferable skills from criminal justice, social care, support work, or allied sectors to apply.

Why Join Us?
  • A rewarding role where you can directly impact people’s lives
  • Opportunities to develop specialist knowledge in prison resettlement and homelessness prevention
  • Supportive team environment committed to learning and improvement
  • The chance to be part of a service shaping innovative approaches to homelessness
