part i: summary of position

the registered nurse is responsible for providing a full range of professional nursing care services for the district.

part ii: minimum knowledge, skills and abilities a. Education and experience
  • graduation from an accredited nursing program
  • experience in a school health office preferred
  • fluency in spanish and english preferred
  • b. Credentials
  • registered professional nurse (rn) license
  • first aid, cpr and aed certification preferred
  • child hearing and vision testing certification preferred
  • c. Knowledge, skills and abilities
  • knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice, ethics, and standards of care, including applicable procedures, protocols, and quality standards.
  • knowledge of pediatric nursing, child and human development, and common childhood health conditions, including infectious diseases and acute and chronic conditions.
  • knowledge of medical, therapeutic, psychiatric, and clinical nursing interventions, including the ability to analyze and evaluate appropriate care and treatment.
  • knowledge of medications, including their actions, interactions, uses, side effects, safe administration, and recognition of adverse reactions.
  • knowledge of emergency care, first aid, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (cpr), with the ability to respond effectively to medical emergencies.
  • knowledge of health-related needs of students with disabilities and other specialized health needs, including students receiving special education services and pregnant or parenting students.
  • knowledge of health-related technology and medical equipment commonly encountered in the school setting, including devices such as insulin pumps and nebulizers.
  • knowledge of community resources and support systems available to children and families, with the ability to connect students and families to appropriate services.
  • skill in conducting health screenings and assessments, including vision, hearing, height/weight, otoscopy, audiometry, tympanometry, and other required school health screenings.
  • skill in physical assessment and clinical observation, including blood pressure, skin color, breath sounds, blood glucose assessment, lice screening, and recognition of changes in student health status.
  • ability to establish therapeutic, supportive, and empathetic relationships with students and families, including listening effectively and assisting them in meeting health needs and carrying out prescribed treatments.
  • ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including accurate documentation, report writing, and communication of health information to appropriate stakeholders.
  • ability to collaborate effectively within interdisciplinary teams, fostering cooperation, trust, shared responsibility, and coordinated student care.
  • ability to demonstrate cultural responsiveness and work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural, linguistic, socioeconomic, and personal backgrounds.
