Summary
The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) Pulmonary practices in Medicine Service to provide a full range of services emphasizing quality - timeliness - and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs (VA) mission. The NP provides advanced clinical practice - consultation - and management. The NP practices to the full extent of their education - training - and certification.

- The NP has prescriptive authority for a panel of patients or program as indicated by their position
- The NP is a licensed independent practitioner with advanced education and national certification who provides evidence-based care for patients
- Major duties and responsibilities of the position in the Medicine Service specialties:
Independently (with mentorship) manages patients with acute and chronic health conditions with an emphasis on advanced care in the specific specialty using evidence based practice - An NPII is in their first year of independent practice
- A clinical mentor will be assigned and a mutual decision made between the provider and mentor on which patients require review and progression to care without review
- Clinical notes done with mentor review will have the statement: "Clinical Care reviewed with (mentor)."
- Consultation and ongoing management can occur in an outpatient - inpatient - virtual - or electronic consult setting
- Works with other providers in their specialty to co-manage patients
- Completes or assists with appropriate medical procedures based on granted privileges and duties as determined by leadership of the Medicine Section
- Demonstrates leadership and works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team
- Orders and interprets labs - tests - and diagnostic studies
- Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions
- Initiates referrals and consults to other specialty services - as appropriate
- Provides education to patients and their families
- Assess and adjusts the plan of care as needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes
