Under direct supervision from a Lead Technician, Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Manager, a Maintenance Technician B performs repair and maintenance work on diesel and non-diesel equipment and trucks, including chassis components, vehicle refuse bodies, control systems, hydraulic, electrical, air brake systems, general engine work, HVAC components, suspension, drivetrain and steering systems. The role may also involve basic tire work such as replacement, tire rotation and tread depth checks.
This position works on a single fleet with state‑of‑the‑art equipment, supporting drivers on their routes and maintaining some of the most technically advanced vehicles on the road.
- Maintain a working knowledge of, and moderate skill proficiency in, vehicle components and systems for preventive and repair maintenance, both on‑site and on the road.
- Repair and maintain chassis components, refuse bodies, control, hydraulic and electrical systems, and air and hydraulic braking systems.
- Perform engine repair and maintenance, suspension, drivetrain and steering system work.
- Operate heating and air conditioning systems.
- Conduct line maintenance welding and fabrication.
- Provide road service when needed to return equipment to safe, efficient operation.
- Diagnose malfunctions using a variety of electronic tools.
- Complete applicable company training programs.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
- Basic understanding of work order labor time standards.
- Prior experience or knowledge of maintenance work on Classes 1‑5 light/medium duty and heavy‑duty Class 7‑8 trucks, aircraft, or ships.
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications (T1‑T8) are a plus but not required.
- Commercial Driver’s License is a plus.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Minimum of 1 year of technician experience demonstrating knowledge of gasoline and diesel‑powered equipment diagnosis and repair, or graduating from an accredited automotive college or technical school within the next 3 months.
- Ability to perform basic inspections with limited supervision in heavy truck or automotive systems such as suspensions & steering, general engine, transmissions, brakes, electrical, hydraulics, drivetrain, and diesel emissions.
